India has in just 50+ years shown the world how to handle diversity - not just cultural but linguistic, and religious. But, Amreeka has done a decent job of it too, though the resource richness helps a lot.
a) Attacked Afganistan, killed innocents, destroyed whatever little infrastructure was in place, failed to capture Mullah Omar or OBL, established a puppet government dependent on US military support.
b) Attacked Iraq, killed innocents, destroyed whatever infrastructure left after Gulf War, failed to find WMD’s, failed to establish a govt (btw, interested in a Cabinet position, plenty of vacanies)

Let the United States be the first to embrace Multiculturalism? Open your eyes, you are just getting late to the party. There have been immigrants coming to these shores for hundreds of years. There are thousands of immigrants washing ashore or crossing the borders illegally every day. Open your Muslim-centric eyes.
It seems there is a big difference in my understanding of embracing multiculturalism verses what others consider it to be. Obviously everyone here thinks having immigrants coming from all over makes one a multicultural country. In that respect North America as a continent is probably last in line rather than being forefront because I am more than sure that my ancestors in Punjab immigrated to the Indus civilization sometime or another.
Multiculturalism in it is very essence is a phenomenon that promotes ideals to overcome racism, sexism, and other forms of discrimination in a culturally pluralistic society. Just having immigrants coming in doesn't make one a multicultural nation.
GIve it another 50 or 60 years. THe white americans will become a minority by then. then we will see where all this melting pot stew goes.

Anyway, america is just an empire. All empires die out. THe ROman empire is gone, so is Ottoman empire, the British empire. So sooner or later the American empire will be gone too, although probably not in our life time. BUt if you know your history then you will know all empires die out.

By the second or third generations the "Chinatowns", "Irish Cities" and Italian mafias are generally gone, and the melting pot is working. I live in a community where we have tons of Irish and Portugese. They teach Portugese in the high schools here! Forty years ago this place was thick with accents, now all the kids sound like rappers or New Jersey mall girls. Go figure.

Multiculturism thrives only when one does not step on too many toes - not when one takes an attitude 'it is okay for me to have a culture/ language/ religion chip on my shoulder but you shouldn't because you claim that you don't have one'. People are only human, at the end of the day
The immigrating community should integrate, of course without losing too much of its flavour
