US State Senate session opens up with Vedic chants

Re: US State Senate session opens up with Vedic chants

^ have there been similar openings with Muslim prayers? there was quite a hullaballoo when a Muslim guy wanted to swear in on the Koran

Re: US State Senate session opens up with Vedic chants

1 guy made a hullaballoo ravage. And yes state senates (and the U.S. senate) have opened with Muslim prayers, Texas did so just last month. The senator who invited the muslim imam to say the prayer was Jewish by the way.

Re: US State Senate session opens up with Vedic chants

Never heard they opened with something similar to it before. If they did please point it out as I am unaware of such an action.

If there are other examples then I would like to see them or plans to do with other chants as well.

Beyond the shadow of doubt. Look at how muslims are treated now in USA since 9/11. Muslims get marked for random checks at the airports even when they buy e-tickets. Japanese well expelled not over half a century ago. Africans went through slavery. Respect for Chinese people in USA has never been good, if US develops strong bilateral relations with China you'll see respect and misunderstandings just wither away then.

Most Hindu majority resides in India so the parallel of Syria or Iran is not right, muslims are in many countries and in majorities as well. When it comes to the msulims world the division usually comes down to Arab, South Asian and East Asian.

Anyway I would like to such examples of respect for other faiths in the parliment from before and at times when relations could have been possibly sour with people of that faith.

As RAVAGE pointed out, there was all this commotion for a Senator swearing upon the Quran and here we are discussing the respect and tolerance of the parliament.

Re: US State Senate session opens up with Vedic chants

i know know which guy you speak of utd, i just remember a spate of articles at that time, especially on right-wing publications.

anyway, good to know of texans opening with Muslim prayers :k:

Re: US State Senate session opens up with Vedic chants

As UTD said, the Texas Senate recently had an imam lead prayers. The California legislature"offers prayers from other traditions, including from the Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist and Christian faiths"

So by your reasoning we shouldn’t pretend respect for any of these people because of past actions? Or even current ones? Respect is not black or white. Pregnant or not pregnant. There are degrees and we should welcome respect and tolerance when we have it.

And African. Let’s not keep forgeting our brothers in Darfur.

It is not fair to box Hindus into “India only”. Just because majority are in India does not make everything Hindu Indian.

Re: US State Senate session opens up with Vedic chants

Good to know this. What was the occasion?

Respect should not be tied into policies. Its human behavior.

Sorry.

If I were to ask show one Hindu country in this world, what would be your answer? Just like Jordon or Egypt having secular structures are still considered muslim countries, why because of the majority population.

Re: US State Senate session opens up with Vedic chants

now suddenly it is "good to know" and not appeasement. I wonder why did your talk of americans selling their beliefs dissapeared as you said it was good to know in this case here?;).....as usual you will come up with some explanation for what i am trying to tell. Go ahead.

Besides, i find it an irrelevant topic. It is their life.

Re: US State Senate session opens up with Vedic chants

Actually the reason I asked about the occasion was so I can see whether this was an involuntary act or because it was in response to something, which would lead me back to my original argument. Your statement comes a bit premature.

Re: US State Senate session opens up with Vedic chants

Apparently it was “Texas Muslim Legislative Day”. Most definitely a voluntary act.

Re: US State Senate session opens up with Vedic chants

I love how open minded american society can be sometimes. That’s how secular democracies should be.:bulbuli:
