US planning a military offensive in Pakistan

Any chance the nuclear things are located in NWPF also? Just wondering. This way Bush can get a 2in1 deal, get elected and prove to the world he is a big shot

I seriously doubt that Bush will deploy ground troops in Pak territory to look for Osama or others. Destabalizing Pakistan is not on bush's list of prirorities. He has 100% backing of Musharraf. But yeah there could be some truth to the fact that Bush will try some ploy if things get tough at home around November 2004 (election time). Democrats are sure going to exploit the fact that over two years have passed and the leader of the real threat to US i.e OBL is no where to be found.

5abi,

I remember seeing after 9-11 and our first U-turn on Talibans, many "analysts" here said that America must not pressure Pakistan on nuke program because it will destabilize Gen.Musharraf. Same was said on Kashmir.

Look what is happening now.

Pakistan India Middle-eAst who cares! Bush's re-election will be decided by jobs and secondly by economy. That's it.

Not even real jobs - just perception. He'll do this and that - reduce visa quota here, invite more Mexicans there....His obstinacy is glorified as decisive leadership, naivete as plainspeak, elitism as character...peel all that and what you have is a colorless bumpkin who is smart enough to be very dangerous to the world.

I hope India and Pakistan are smart enough to deal with him. But Americans I shudder for!

US is already in pakistan ...no problem with attacking here ..it was always on cards.........

It is expected that america will dump musshy like it dumped saddam and shah iran ..........

They dont need to invade Pakistan like they invaded Afghanistan or Iraq, they already have their henchmen and puppets (Mushy being the head) operating at maximum efficiency.

sure enough friendship with amreeka comes with a possible price of backstabbing. Musharraf knows that, but he has still done what is in country's best interests. Just think of it this way, Pakistan is still goverened by us and not US :)

Abdali,

We'll know soon enough when the bums start exploding in Waziristan or otherwise ;)

Bombs have already exploded in S.waziristan. ;)

Oh you would love that, wouldn’t you? I can quite imagine the desperation on the faces of Indians. They can’t jump into air with clinched fists joyous at an American attack on Pakistan, nor can they sit back and wait for things to unfold. :hehe:

America attacking Pakistan has always been Indians dream. Now its even more highlighted thanks to India's 2002 border picnic.

i really don't think India wants wars.. they'd be stupid to want that with their economy and foreign investments.. they'd rather keep Pakistan at bay with US ensuring the nation doesn't become another 'rogue' regime..

As long as you have a sell out Army you'd keep kneeling in front of other nations.. Agents have all the time been on the ground .. now they'd just be overt about it.. and the OBL theory isn't too far fetched either.. Bush needs to pull it off or pull off another attack.. or both..

Actually war in Pakistan would affect Indian economy, tourism etc. It would be a risk for investment etc. India doesnt want a wat in it backyard …

Americans would postpone outsourcing IT, financial, call center jobs in a war environment. Economy needs stability.

ah come on buddy. You dont really want me to believe that, do you? You just reworded what some Indian politician said months back.

Marathi

but you are basing your assessment of common sense. knowing our countries wherethe masses give in to emotions and misdirected anger atthe other side there is probably some cheering going on in many circles. as would be the case if the situation were reversed.

We as nations, and as people need to start looking past this historic rivalry.

If US is planning such a misadventure then it is extremly stupid to let every Tom Dick and Harry know. BUT US is not that stupid so my take is this is lot of hot air.

Any one of you remember operation Anaconda in Afghanistan? The NA double crossed the yanks for $$s and informed Al-Qaida of the plan. What happened after that I don't have to say anyting.

My take on it is:

A. The US has already done soemthing in the tribal areas. This news "leak" is to avoid some embarassment down the line. Three months from now, when Bush's popularity is down, he can suddenly produce Osama in a cage and say, we got him from Pak tribal areas

B. The other theory is that by saying this US is hoping that the al-Qaida types run away from the FATA straight into a trap set by Pak troops or US troops across the border.

If Musharraf did agree to this.. I know what he may have been thinking.. here's a region out of bounds for the military.. he's talked to these people, requested them and what not but support for the militants hasn't subsided to the extent that they are after his own life.. they do all that and go hide in there.. so let's let the US Army in from the other side and tighten the noose on the other to tell the militants the kid gloves are off..

Many of the Al Qaeda people caught in Pakistan were caught in cities like Faisalabad... if the Pakistan government is stupid enough to give the Americans an official inch (they already are inside in the intelligence field) of territory they won't stop till they get a whole mile.

U.S. concerned by extremists in Pakistan, Saudi

Defeating Islamic extremism in Saudi Arabia and Pakistan is a bigger strategic challenge for the United States than finishing the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, Gen. John Abizaid, commander of U.S. Central Command said Thursday.

PakistaniAbroad,

I'm thinking along the same lines. The fact is that US Special Forces have always entered Pakistani territory when they wanted to, but only in small numbers.

But I think, this leak is a message to the sardars and others that those hiding might be better off surrendering to Pakistani troops rather than face the reckless American troops, who tend to shoot first and ask questions later.
