Demi , I had to put toothpaste coz that is what is recommended by our health visitors due to the fact that our water doesnt have enough floride so we have to obtain it through tooth pastes ..
Also I have tried immensely to get him to brush while i do it too , but doesnt work , he wants my brush too and its freaking tantrum all over ..

CB i went through horrible mornings with Ammar as well. But i taught Ammar how to do qulli (mouth rinsing) with me. I would show him how, and made it into a game. At first, he would do that 3-4 time in the morning instead of brushing his teeth. Later on i started him with the brushing too. Now he does both. Try that with him.

We went through a phase where he didn’t want to brush his teeth especially with me, so husband used to help him brush teeth.

I didn’t get a chance to read all replies but here is what we do.. I put a tiny bit tooth paste on the brush and let him brush his teeth… Then it’s my turn to brush his teeth. I tell him to open his mouth so I can take out the things he ate during the day and are stuck in there.. Sometimes he reminds me that I forgot to take out this or that. Then I tell him that we need to check for cavities and brush more… Let’s say my son loves to hear new words so I throw in as many new words as possible often. Then we rinse and spit making bubbles in the sink.. Even just a lil bubble counts 
I use jack and Jill natural tooth paste for him.. So even if he swallows some it’s okay. here is the link
