Lupin is also one of the only professors to call students by their first names instead of “Mr.” or “Miss.” He is always fair and pleasant, even to Professor Snape, who does not extend those same courtesies in return (to say the least). It takes a lot to upset Lupin; Snape’s hostilities and Peeves’ insults roll off his back, and he only really gets stern when Harry foolishly endangers his own life. He placed emphasis on dangerous magical beasts, and made lessons interesting and fun. To nearly everyone’s disappointment, he resigned when word leaked out he was a werewolf. **
Remus Lupin was bitten as a child by a vicious werewolf enacting revenge upon Remus’s father. His parents desperately tried to find a cure, but none existed. Remus was terrified he would not be accepted at Hogwarts, but Dumbledore allowed him, as long as special precautions were taken. His Hogwarts years turned out to be his happiest, when he met his fellow Marauders. Remus feared his friends would desert him when they found out what he was, and tried frantically to hide it from them. But the lads were clever, and figured it out for themselves. It was Remus’s lycanthropy that led to their becoming Animagi to keep him company during his unpleasant transformations.
**Lupin is a thin man of about 35 years. His brown hair is prematurely streaked gray, and his face has fine stress lines, which make him sometimes seem older. Because he is ill once a month, owing to his lycanthropy, he appears almost perpetually pale and tired. As Ron said, “He looks like one good hex would finish him off…” His robes are tattered and his luggage is held together with string. There is a great prejudice against werewolves, and Lupin is poor due to his inability to find paid work. However, he is somehow almost always in good spirits; indeed, the word most often used in the books to describe him is “pleasant.” That Remus has not fallen into the depths of despair and dysfunction is incredible. **
He remains a caring, unbiased person despite the onslaught of prejudice directed towards him and the loss of his only friends. He pushes onward, carrying those burdens bravely with him, never blaming his miseries or mistakes on anyone
He has lost almost everyone dear to him: James and Lily Potter, Sirius Black (and Peter Pettigrew who betrayed them all
and Albus Dumbledore. Remus currently works for the Order of the Phoenix, primarily as an undercover spy in the werewolf community. Recently it was learned that Nymphadora Tonks has developed romantic feelings for him, and despite his reluctance (he thought he was too old, too poor, too sick) he seems to have accepted her advances. I, for one, couldn’t be happier about this. It is likely that Remus has been alone for much of his adult life, and I feel that Tonks could be an energizing, loving and accepting presence for him. I hope that they find solace and love in one another throughout the continuing war and beyond.
