Umar bhai: You're right, the genres are fairly different. the writing style is very different too. Tanhaaiyan and Ankahi were typical Haseena Moin feel good stories brought alive by some brilliant acting and excellent direction.
But what really helps Umrao Jaan Ada blow away other plays is the acting, the sets, the songs, the dances, the research. The drama was shot after 14 months of research. The cast included 200 actors/actresses. The sets are grand - fountains, real palaces etc etc. There are over 15 songs, I believe. And the most amazing thing about the drama is the girl who plays Umrao - Amina Bano. She's doing her very first play but she's just so amazing. You just have to listen to the language and the local customs to realize how good the acting is. Plus throw in the versatile Bushra Ansari and the ever dependable Badar Khalil and you've got a great cast. The storyline is so strong and realistic. Just the attention to detail on part of the director is worth appreciating. The camerawork is very, very good too. Heck even the child actors in this play are better than some of their adult counterparts from other silly plays like Landa Bazaar etc etc.
Knowing that you're a drama buff, I would strongly recommend you go for the DVDs. I got 'em from vdoworld (your recommendation). They're well worth it and if you're not satisfied, remember that this purchase is backed by my money-back guarantee. :D Even if you don't rank it above Tanhyaaian, Ankahi etc you will definitely remember it as one of the all-time classics.
The drama comes on Sunday at 8:05 pm on Geo. You've missed two episodes already though - two episodes that were amazing.
Faisal, I've purchased a couple of dramas online and they play fine on my Panasonic player... I think whe desistore says Multiversion, what they actually wanna say is that the stuff isn't encoded for specific regions... in fact I've successfully made "backup" copies of the DVDs and the program didn't complain about encoding or anything!

Its available on DVD via desistore.. though they say it will only play in Multi-region DVD players, so I am assuming the US players are out of luck.
I have heard they also had the same song as in the Indian movie of the same name "Inn aankhoN ki masti ke..."? True?

I played it on the XBox DVD player. worked just fine for me.
regarding the songs, I don't know whether they were used already or not. some of the songs are really old and could have been used in older movies but they probably were not original compositions for those movies either. I don't really watch Indian movies, so don't know for sure.
The songs are mostly sung by Mehnaz, Fareeha Pervaiz, Iqbal Bano, Hamid Ali Khan. They have a couple of Fuzon songs in there too but without any music.
if the drama is not as good as I say it is, I will publicly announce that I don’t know anything about dramas and I’ve just been faking it thus far. how’s that for a guarantee.
I reckon we should get rid of the money-back thing now since we’re working by the honour system. how’s about editing that quote now, Faisal bhai?
That song in aankhon ki masti...with iman ali dancing to it is not from the play. It looks like an independently made video. She didn't quite dance to the song anyway.

Okay samby - I watched the first episode on saturday night on GEO, it sure looks superb!

Geo guys are smart. Now you will fork out the requisite $14.99 after three days :-D
this is simply an amazing drama and the direction and production are top class. the main actress is beautiful (as we saw in the end when she was dancing) but her articulation of urdu and acting is what impressed me most.
I watched the first episode and that was with the my satellite messing up cause of the rotten signals
From what I’ve seen, must say…a brilliant drama! :k:
I might as well buy the DVD of it cause i know there is no way I’m gonna remember the timing of it.
wlast night I didnt see it from the beginning but umrao becomes fascianted with how all the other girls have their own rooms in which they stay with all these men who love them and their voices and stuff. She tells the bari bee ( busra ansari: forgot her charcter's name) that she wants her own room too and she tells her to wait. However Umrao starts liking this man played by faisal qureshi who towards the end rapes her while hiding his identity. The episode ended with Umrao crying..eagerly waiting for next episode.
