Honey is good for u, build immunity!
Re: Traditional First Food fed to new born Babies!
I thought honey was dangerous for babies!! The honey bottle always says do not feed to children under 1 years old!
I never heard of this ghuttee practice.....but something similar is rubbing some date in their mouth, its called tahneek and is from the sunnah
I have always heard the word Ghuttee, but it could be ghurtee, not sure ![]()
Re: Traditional First Food fed to new born Babies!
Yes, medically speaking, its not a good idea to give honey to infants under age 1 year. Substitute something else, as long as its sweet that should be fine. Chocolate or sugar water perhaps.
Honey contains trace amounts of botulism spores. Not numerous enough to cause illness in healthy and developed immune systems but can be fatal to an infant. The risk is pretty small but since its such a serious illness. why take the chance. Use something other than honey.
Yup , its ghuttee … My nana jee confirmed it as well !
Re: Traditional First Food fed to new born Babies!
I have always known it as ‘ghurthee’![]()
Yeah so you have obviously known it wrong ![]()
Re: Traditional First Food fed to new born Babies!
I was just on the phone to my mum and she said it was ghurthee- with the ‘ray’ sound emphasised.
interesting!
maybe its in punjaabi that they say ghutee… my nana is punjabi , hence my guess …
Re: Traditional First Food fed to new born Babies!
I was trying to pronounce it which the ‘ray’ sound and it was not possible. My mum said it in punjabi too:cb: so I don’t know. Let’s have them both:hula:
Re: Traditional First Food fed to new born Babies!
There is no agreement on ghuttee and ghuRtee. I’m not ready to compromise on ‘ghuttee’ ![]()
Re: Traditional First Food fed to new born Babies!
Hubs gave gurthi to our daughter. He mashed some ajwa khajoor and fed a tiny bit to her.
Ira called it gurthi too. It is upto you what you decide to call it. I am going to stick to ghuRthee:hula:

:ASA: you guys , stop fighting …
I tried looking on the internet .. and found this article :
a few words from the article : The majority of women—55 percent— fed their children initially with traditional substances such as honey, ***ghutti ***(an herbal paste), water, green tea, or other foods (see Table 2). Studies have shown that breast milk is the best first food for babies and that such “prelacteals” may be harmful to infants. Honey, for example, may contain the dormant spores of a bacteria that causes a rare but very serious condition called infant botulism.
I tried looking for Ghurttee as DDR and I , thought it was pronounced and cant seem to find anything on the internet, but type ghutti and you will find several links … so chill now … :cb:

Re: Traditional First Food fed to new born Babies!
To be honest, it doesn’t really matter on the pronunciation/spelling, it is such a beautiful little radi. We have always called it this, and I will most probably still call it as so.
Thanks for the info though CB
