Hi-tec gadgets to play major role for Pak team on NZ tour
By Waheed Khan
KARACHI: The Pakistan cricket squad which embarks on a 50-day tour of New Zealand on Saturday will be carrying with it state of the art computer/video equipment and software, which would be used strategically during the series.
Dr Noman Niaz, the analyst of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is specially travelling with the squad to operate the hi-tec equipment and software, which has been purchased by the Board recently to enable its team to technically match their opponents.
Pakistan coach Javed Miandad said on Thursday that he and Noman Niaz had been using the equipment and software during the training camp in Lahore and it had worked very well. "We have prepared a complete player to play analysis of the black caps and have formulated different plans through the use of the software for the coming tour," he added.
The Pakistan coach said he had got a lot of help from the software in not only helping out his players but also learning about the weaknesses and strong points of our opponents. "Obviously one knows a lot about the other teams normally, but what this software and equipment has done is given us even the slightest details about our own players and our opponents and their recent track records and how they perform under given conditions and against what sort of bowlers and batsmen."
Miandad said Geoffrey Boycott, the former England opener who is in Lahore these days on a coaching assignment had also used the software and equipment during the three days he spent with the Pakistan players. "It is much easier to explain something to our own players using graphics," he added.
He was confident that the younger players like Shahid Afridi, Imran Nazir, Imran Farhat, Muhammad Sami, Saleem Elahi in particular would benefit a lot on the coming tour from the Board's decision to invest in state of the art software and computer/video material.
Miandad stressed that the Chairman of the Board was very keen on having such equipment for the Pakistan team and also appointing a full time analyst, since the leading teams of the world like Australia and South Africa had used the same methods to their good advantage.
The Pakistan team training camp ended in Lahore on Thursday and now the players would be assembling on Saturday to fly to Auckland. Wasim Akram who has gone to Ireland will join the team in New Zealand. According to Miandad all the selected players are carrying no injuries and are well prepared for the coming series.
Asked as to how much had Boycott's coaching and guidance benefitted the Pakistan players, Miandad was diplomatic in his answer stating the players had told him the former England opener had pointed out the same things to them which he (Miandad) had been doing but through the help of modern equipment. "I basically feel it is upto the players to learn from such guidance and tips. One can only guide them and point out things to them. It is upto them to benefit from such things."
Its technology that makes aussies and afrikans better then us.
May be this would help us get closer to em.
Guys who do you think should open with Saeed? We got quite a few options there. Afridi? Farhar?.
In my opinion get Farhat to open and see how he goes. Auckland is famous of being "left hander's ground" and we should maximise this advantage by sending both left handers as openers. Afridi could come down the order and play a little cameo towards the finishing stage.
what do you all think?
Watch and see how Imran Farhat will improve and become a progressive test batsman. Also his brother too.
For ODI's, might as well give Afridi the open, and for the Test's, jump around see.. maybe try someone for the first test then second then third.. etc. To get a good picture of who's good at which position.
What about the one dayers people's champ?
Pick one a) Afridi b) farhat??
I have not seen Imran Farhat bat so can't say anything.
Does anyone find it interesting how Shahid Afridi usually bowls and sometimes bats better in the few Test outings that he's had :-? I do think he's been given a long run, but I also think his skills as a handy fifth bowler can be honed further. The Pakistani team doesn't always have the luxury of playing two specialist spinners, and with the likes of Malik and Sohail not being in the team anymore, there are no "handy men" that the captain can turn to if one of his specialists gets hammered. We see this happening more now since we play allrounders regularly but they are all medium fast, and sometimes a slow bowler is needed. Comments :-?
I agree with you there. Afridi could be dropped down the order if he isn’t scorring as an opener. Apart from all the pluses you mentioned, i think he is fitter then rest of the bunch too. Lets see how he cops with swinging conditions in NZ and where they bat him. visit: http://www.sportsmasala.com/cricket/battle%20of%20the%20downtrodden.htm

I have nothing personal against football, and did play a few games over last summer, but I do agree with Pathan Bhai’s sentiments. Thank God we have Pathan Bhai to

Hey, what happened here anyway :-? Wasn’t this supposed to be the greatest threads ever :-? True I am a newbie and don’t exactly know the extent of inter-forum rivalries on Gupshup, but this thread was about cricket, and we can never run out of things to say about Pakistani cricket and cricketers and fans and officials and coaches and umpires and the ICC-walas and the generals and the goras and everyone who is no one now, can we ;-?
Seriously, how about this:
The latest PriceWaterhouseCoopers One-Day International leading standings are as follows -
I am only listing the Pakistanis in top 10.
Batting: 9= Sanath Jayasuriya (Sri Lanka); 9= Inzamam-ul-Haq (Pak).
Bowling: 10 Abdur Razzaq (Pak).
All-rounders: 5 Shaun Pollock (SA).
“It will be a difficult team to select. There’s so much talent - by the grace of God - that we’re actually embarrassed about who we might have to leave out,” the paper quoted the manager as saying.
(AP report: the manager is Fakir Aizazuddin)
Interesting, how our captain, coach, and manager aren’t getting tired of boasting, yet the PWC ratings, which are a good measure of current performance, seem to have but one Pakistani player in each category. Are we full of hot air? The Ws I can handle, but what accomplishments does our dear Shoaib Akhter has to boast of :-? For that matter, where is Saqlain’s form :-?
I expect some heavy flaming here now. Don’t disappoint me
welcome Fahd, well we all are right here just waiting for the series to get underway and then insha allah again this thread will be running nice n high.
You are right abt saqlain’s form, if he doesn’t perform then he has a real battle in his hand because pakistan do have 2 very good offies in their bag in the form of Arshad Khan and Shoaib Malik. Fingers crossed, wait and see what happen’s of saturday!

I am sure you can express your disillusionment with the Pakistani cricket team with a bit more vigor than this!
If you are gonna hang around for the NZ tour, I hope to have some nice

I haven’t seen Shoaib Malik, so I’ll defer to you on that. I know he’s handy with the bat. Arshad Khan, I like the guy. He’s got a fighting spirit, and bowls very economically most of the time. I just wish he’d take a few more wickets in ODIs. Economy is good, but IMHO, when one has competition like you just mentioned, one has to do better than tie up ends.
If you really want to me express the facts a bit more vigorios ill be more than happy to oblige but i dont want all u cricket lovers going crazy and mad.
My friend, you expect to walk into a cricket thread with nearly a hundred posts, bash cricket, and not expect your head to be taken off by a flamie bouncer, your ribcage rattled, your thumb given a hairline fracture, and your toe crushed, not to mention a fair share of drink bottles and rocks thrown on you from the stands ;-?
I admit cricket isn’t half as “hooliganist” as soccer is, but it isn’t a quiet English afternoon game either anymore, and as long as the rivalry stays on the pitch and is sporting, it’s for the better, I think.
On a serious note, in sports facts are limited to scorecards. Everything else, including what you will find here, will be opinions. Some of those opinions will be reasonable, others will not be, and we all hope to avoid the latter, unsubstantiated versions, don’t we :-? But let’s not get carried away and look for facts. There’d be nothing to talk about in this thread then. That’s just my humble opinion
