Canada seems so boring. My friend just came back from 3 months of studying in Toronto and said theres absolutely zilch to do there. Crap weather and just parks a few clubs to visit (which you get in all cities anyway). She said it was like being locked away in hibernation from rest of the world.
I was born and raised in Canada and now living in the U.S. I don't think I would want to go back and live there. There are many differences between Canada and the U.S. I can't say that one country is better than the other since both have their flaws. But when I go back to visit my parents in Canada I notice more and more of the flaws. There are many things that I just thought were normal and took for granted but now having experienced other things, I see Canada in a new light.
I'm curious for an elaboration as well. I find Canada to have slightly more flaws than the UK personally, primarily in the areas of lack of commercial competition and government efficiency. For example, I find the concept of having to file tax returns to be kind of backwards, and medical care doesn't seem as developed as in the UK (though the health care system here was apparently originally based on copying the British state health service).
But that's only to be expected in a country with a population this small.
That might stem from the fact that Canada still considers itself a socialist country hence is usually hesitant to let capitalist ventures seep in from the south.
The medicare sucks because well, even if they did try to adopt the British system, theyre trying to run it according to the American system.. i.e. everybody on their own.
First socialized medicine in Canada is not working out too well. Both of my parents are sick. My dad had a heart attack and didn't receive all the proper care he should have received. My mother has to wait weeks or months sometimes to see a specialist. There are many things about the US as well that I don't like. America the Superpower, the Bully. I don't agree with many of the political decisions of the President. Canada is the "Neighbor to the North", the liberal, gay-marriage friendly country.
I notice that everything in America is big, larger than life, over the top, full of cultural references and stereotypes. Canada is smaller, quieter, more polite, slightly timid. I feel like I'm pretty clear on what "American culture" means but I can't quite define "Canadian culture". It seems that Canada has borrowed somewhat from America but also relies heavily on it's historical lineages. (The Natives, French, British) America is about Hollywood, Industry, Rock and Roll, Slavery, Vietnam, Gangsters, Prohibition, and Canada is about... (tell me)
I'd like to hear from others. Help me to define the Canada I left, probably the Canada I never knew.
