Toilet Training - getting ready

Re: Toilet Training - getting ready

I'm not sure. Certainly older toddlers are able to. But for one as young as yours, I think it depends on whether they tell you BEFORE doing something (like they can sense it coming, cuz it's a sign of control). Also some babies start being drier at night and that shows that they are developing some control. From what I've read, USUALLY girls are ready earlier than boys, but these are all generalizations that are easily contradicted, I think. It's harder to tell with yours cuz he isn't talking much. What makes you feel like it's time to train? Is he giving you certain cues?

Re: Toilet Training - getting ready

sahar, he tells us what he wants for pretty much everything else and that is what got me thinking maybe he is ready. Also we have been trying for a second one so thought I should get him started.

Re: Toilet Training - getting ready

Well, what has helped with our girl is those seats you put on top of the toilet. It has handles and makes smaller kids feel stable. It’s definitely worth getting that if you’re ready, cuz the toilet will make him uncomfortable. Also I don’t like the seats that are completely separate from a toilet, cuz that is one more thing for me to clean!

I like this type (this is the exact one we have and we got two, one to keep with her grandparents): Amazon.com: Nickelodeon Dora The Explorer "Butterfly Buddies" Soft Potty : Baby

Not this (MIL got it for us, but I don’t find it useful): Amazon.com: BABYBJORN Potty Chair, Blue : Baby

Re: Toilet Training - getting ready

oh I decided a long time ago that I am not gonna get the potty chair that is separate. I don't like the idea of cleaning it. I like the kids toilet seat that you place on the regular seat. I think I'm gonna get those and see what happens.

Re: Toilet Training - getting ready

^Great. Keep us posted!

Re: Toilet Training - getting ready

I wil get the seat thingy you can put on the regular toilet because that has always seemed the better thing to do.I dont want to go through the hassle of having a seperate potty...where the hell where I clean it...??..Oh btw someone gave me a musical one as a gift...:D.It just feels weird to me...associate music with doing it in the potty.
Toilet training scares me.How will I ever train her...???...:(

Re: Toilet Training - getting ready

We have both the seat that you put on the toilet and then a seperate one with a lid on it. Now we use the lid one as a stool to wash her hands etc.

To start, try by putting him on the toilet every 30-45 mins religiously. I was pregnant when we really started doing it continously. to be honest if her day care provider hadnt taken the intiative i probably wouldnt have been so serious about it. There were quite a few accident on carpets and hubs wasnt too happy about them. But i found she treated pullups as diapers so i took them away and instead bought those Gerber training pants. She has been out of diapers for 2 months + but occasionally she will have an accident. She tells me when she has to go but i still make sure to take her to the bathroom every hour if not, then atleast every 2 hours in case she has forgotten.

Some ppl do stickers etc but she didnt care for them as a gift. What did help was that i told her that all her friends were doing potty in the toilet and also if she goes in the toilet then she can go to the older kid's class which she really wants to go. Now the problem was that she got trained earlier than she was allowed to be in the class lol. So we are still waiting for that. And they tell you to not make a big deal out of accidents. Mostly i didnt but some days i was just so exhausted becuz of pregnancy, i daantofied her gently. That kinda helped too, surprisingly.

Also take it one thing at a time: dont expect him to be dry at night so soon. Mine is mostly dry at night but she has had accidents before at night so i started putting diapers to be safe but she doesnt want to anymore. So give him some time, expect this procedure to take atleast a couple of weeks if not a month.

Sahar, if i were you, i would start your daughter now if she is showing signs of being ready. It will be much easier for you in Karachi to take her to the bathroom instead of changing diapers in wierd places if you are out shopping.

Re: Toilet Training - getting ready

^ Thanks Ira. I guess I will suck it up and do it. I doubt I'll take her shopping with me (unless we're in one of the nicer malls). She'll stay at home with a grandparent otherwise :D. I'm just worried about having no option but those holes in the floor. Or being at a shadi or something and having to find a bathroom cuz she needs to go right then and there. Would be easier if she had a diaper, right? But then I don't want to give her mixed messages.

Re: Toilet Training - getting ready

Sahar, the trick is to have her go to the bathroom every hour or so once she is used to going in there so you dont have to deal with emergency situations. Also, if there are hole in the ground toilets at the place you are staying at, buy one of those portable potties with a lid, the kind you have here. Or the seat that goes on the regular toilet seat if they have them there.
