28th May, 2007 : The Japanese Minister of Agriculture, Toshikatsu Matsuoka, was found dead in his apartment after he had hanged himself. The sixty-two year old committed suicide prior to being questioned in the Japanese parliament over being implicated in a political scandal. The suicide marked the first time a Japanese cabinet member had committed suicide since World War II.

28th May, 2008 : The nation of Nepal voted to abolish their two hundred and forty year old monarchy and became the world's newest republic. An assembly meeting in Kathmandu voted overwhelmingly to end the monarchy and the news was received with celebrations in the streets. The country had previously faced a conflict between the monarchy and Maoists.

28th May, 2009 : The Chiang Mai zoo was pleasantly surprised when an eight year old panda, Lin Hui, gave birth to a cub unexpectedly. The birth took place three months after Lin Hui was artificially inseminated, she had shown no signs of a pregnancy before the birth. The cub was healthy and was set to be raised in Thailand for two years before being handed over to China.

29th May 1953 : Edmund Hillary of New Zealand and Tenzing Norgay of Nepal become the first explorers to reach the top of Mount Everest . Due to the amount of time it took to descend the mountain it was June 2nd before the rest of the world were told about the conquest.

29th May 1972 : Three gunmen open fire on crowds at Lod International Airport in Tel Aviv, Israel, killing 26 people and injuring dozens more. The Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine claimed responsibility and said they had recruited the gunmen from the Japanese Red Army who committed the murders

29th May 1984 : At least 5,000 miners picket the Orgreave coking plant near Sheffield trying to stop British Steel's coke convoys, they are met by police using riot gear forcing the pickets to allow lorry drivers with coke deliveries for British Steel and a number of fights break out with police using truncheons and charging the picketers who were using Smoke bombs, bricks, stones.
