Cricketplaya is right. With the collapse of the Commonwealth as a trading bloc in the 60s, Canada's economy has become utterly tied to that of the USA.

Why are people happy? A strong Canadian dollar is a bad thing for Canada.
There is a reason why China has been keeping its currency** artificially weak**. In today's world, it is better to have a weak currency since that makes exports and services cheaper for you.

It doesn't effect American. If they find it expensive (except for high tech stuff) they have dozens of other countries waiting to export goods to them. However, Canada could get a blow if it start losing key export sectors. Economy is vastly dependend on US economy which itself is in fear of biggest reccession in decades.
