To whom and how do you give Zakat?

Re: To whom and how do you give Zakat?

Numb, I know what you mean but I think the official ruling on Zakat and Fitrana was that it cannot be given to non-Muslims, atleast thats what I remember reading in O'level Islamiyat a while back. Ofcourse, I might be wrong. I do agree that charity in general should have no restrictions.

Personally, we should all go above the 2.5% and help our brothers and sisters (whoever they are) as much as we can. We'll be rewarded with more wealth and will feel good about ourselves.

Re: To whom and how do you give Zakat?

I usually donate to Muslim aid on their website. They seem pretty genuine and a have lots of projects you can donate towards.

I know what you mean my friend, I never was talking about non-muslims. I'm a Muslim like you. I speak the Kalima, I pray 5 times, I study/recite the Qur'an, I pay my zakat, I believe in the angels of Allah, I believe in the books of Allah, I believe in the Prophets of Allah and I believe in the Day of Judgement.

Judaism and Christianaty are the pre-phase of Islam, so please refrain from calling them non-Muslim. Every new born is born as Muslim if you know that, but they are born to different beliefs and are raised then accroding to their beliefs. Why did Allah then say? *I have completed the Religion for you Today, I have sent you down the guidance for the whole mankind. *

Thank You :)

Where did I even mention Judaism and Christianity? lol

Its simple, Zakat and fitrana is reserved for just Muslims, everything else can apply to non-muslims, including Ahmedis.

Re: To whom and how do you give Zakat?

i've a qs regarding zakat, can someone esp who's well off , give zakat to his/ her own parents /parent and sibling ??

Re: To whom and how do you give Zakat?

we pass it on to our relatives in pakistan and tell them to give it to the poor

will look forward to that

Re: To whom and how do you give Zakat?

salam there is a whole section on zakat on sunnipath: here is one article:

In the Hanafi school, it is both permitted and best to give zakat to one’s immediate family (besides one’s parents, children, and spouse) if they are needy, unless there are others with more obvious and urgent needs that will remain unmet.

Imam Abu Bakr al-Kasani ((Allah have mercy on him) said in his Bada’i al-Sana’i:

“It is permitted to give zakat to anyone besides one’s parents, and offspring from one’s relatives, such as one’s brothers and sisters and others. This is because shared benefit of mutual wealth is cut off between them [f: unlike one’s parents and offspring].” [Kasani, Bada’i al-Sana’i, 2.50]

Al-Fatawa al-Hindiyya quotes Haddadi’s Siraj al-Wahhaj as stating:

“It is best in zakat, fitr, and vows, to direct one’s money first to one’s [needy and eligible] brothers and sisters, then to their offspring, then to… [other relatives in order of closeness]…” [al-Fatawa al-Hindiyya, 1.190]

Re: To whom and how do you give Zakat?

Zakat should be given to deserving anybody. beginning from someone in the family or community, who is indigent but does not ask for any help on their own.

note: nota scholar, but generally i think that withholding help from anyone, just because they are not Muslims, does not feel right, being a Muslimah.
Ideally, yes, zakat ought to be given to deserving Muslims, if there are any around whome you can give zakat to.
Or establish a charity and send money to an orphanage/ orphan on a refular long term basis.

This year we gave it to kidney center in karachi, they have needy people depends on charity to receive treatment from the hospital. Last year we gave money to shaukat khanum memorial cancer hospital.

Zakat is only for poor Muslims.. there must be great wisdom behind it Allah knows best.

also, we are free to give other forms of charity to needy non-Muslims any time we want.

but we have to stick with the ruling that Zakat is for Muslims.

I had actually posted the link in the original post, but I am quoting it for you. I normally consult this site when I have any questions, so that all my queries are answered by the same source.
