Re: Throwing away food
hi riya, if the food changes its color or leaves a layer of liquid on itself, that means it is either spoiling or spoiled.
you might have to throw this.
one way is to heat it up and see if it tastes any different.
the lesson for next time, store things in air tight and cool place.
cooked anything stored well, with the exception of meat, can last a week.
it also depends on the recipe. if it is soemthing with yogurt and spices, or heavy sauce with mashed or cooked soaked vegetables in it or beans of anykind, then it may be a good idea to eat it soon.
we used to have this prob in my house...6 adults in our home mA. My mom is diabetic, my sister is fully veg, and my youngest brother only likes food with a dead animal. I would tell my mom all the time not to make anything because we eat outside all day long and don't have much of an appetite when we come back. but since cooking is like..integral to my mom's identity she didn't like that idea...so now she just makes 3 servings worth of dinner and nothing is ever wasted.
If you see a pattern of waste, don't keep making the SAME amount of food everytime!! Adjust it. Also don't make rice; it doesn't keep well at all and you will just end up throwing it out or making kheer every week. Just buy the ready made naans, and everyone can toast as many as they want-no waste, and save effort.
Also sometimes a Costco membership isn't really worth it...buying a 36 pack of pudding might make sense given how fast kids eat the 4 pack but we kids are brats and we won't finish them; we get bored really fast.
Also, things like mint and parsley are a real rip off if you buy them in the store plus they go bad fast so see if you can grow it on your windowsill.
Also make "least complex" meals first ex. start with keema with shimla mirch...whatever's leftover can be made into sloppy joes or mixed in with spaghetti sauce the next day and no one will notice.
