Three dead as cricket ignites Hindu-Muslim violence in India

Gujrat still smouldering under the gazing eyes of the so called secular Indian establishment. What a charade.

AHMEDABAD, India (AFP) - Three people were killed and 35 injured in Hindu-Muslim violence set off by a dispute over a children’s cricket match in the riot-torn western Indian state of Gujarat, officials said.

The unrest broke out in Viramgam, 62 kilometers (38 miles) northwest of the commercial capital Ahmedabad, when Muslim boys were playing cricket and their ball strayed into a Hindu temple, officials said Sunday.

“When they tried to get the ball, they were beaten up by Hindus after which there was heavy stone-pelting between the two communities,” provincial Home Secretary K. Nityanandam told AFP.

Rival crowds burned down several shops and traded potshots with guns and rocks until police opened fire to disperse the rioters, he said.

Three people died from bullet wounds and 35 others were injured, eight of them from firing and the rest from stones, Nityanandam said.

Nityanandam and K. Chakravarthy, the state’s director general of police, both said it was unclear whether the bullets that killed the three protesters came from police or other rioters.

Chakravarthy said Viramgam had returned to normal but that extra police were sent and a night curfew imposed as precautions.

It was the deadliest incident in months in Gujarat, which last year saw India’s worst communal riots in a decade.

The violence broke out in February 2002 when a Muslim mob in the Gujarat town of Godhra torched a train carrying right-wing Hindu activists, killing 59 people.

More than 2,000 people, mostly Muslims, were killed in the subsequent orgy of violence.

The provincial government, led by India’s ruling Hindu nationalists, was accused by rights groups of turning a blind or even sympathetic eye to the vigilante attacks against Muslims.

Muslims can never hope for security when living under non-Islamic systems and they will continue to suffer as we are witnessing every day in India. Secularism preaches that everyone will be accepted on the basis of their citizenship and religion is a personal affair, but we witness time and again in Bosnia, china and India how muslims are singled out and massacred. it is time for muslims to abandon secularism as a false creed and turn to the Islamic creed as a measure for solving their problems on a societal level and only then will minorities living among the majority be protected.

India should ban any non-business activity in Gujrat. Hindus can use any thing for excuse to start a riot ... oh I forgot Hindus never start a riot.

i see bunch of ignorant illiterate people ( both hindus and muslims) who just needed a lame excuse like children's cricket match, to fight.
it has nothing to do with the government or secularism. it has to do with grown ups who encourage such stupidity among their kids.

It has to do with grown ups who haven't grown up yet.

Well said.

There was violence against Muslims in Aligarh as well the other day, pointing to an ever increasing hostility towards Muslims across India.

Well said, Rvikz. Samajhne Wale samajh Gaye hain, jo naa samjhe woh Anaari hai.

That’s the ‘silent majority’ in India who voted the BJP-RSS fundementalists-terrorists into power, over and over again.

You may be aware, BJP is not in majority and is in power with 13 other parties.

The violence in Gujarat was a tragic aberration and we have condemned it unequivocally," said Mr Vajpayee. “It is important to remember that these tragic incidents remain localised - the secular fabric of India remains intact.”

Yes we are aware that some 75% of Indian government ministers are from the BJP-RSS, and that so-called "secular" parties allow this extremist and terrorist government to remain in power. So much for their commitment to secularlism huh?

rvikz, maybe your PM should stop praisng Hitler Modi as he has been doing since the genocide in Gujrat, then somebody might start believing his statements?

how do you know one party will always win?

Vajpayee cannot aspire to become the Prime Minister again after the Lok Sabha polls next year as his party BJP will be routed," he said.

Well let's see maybe because the Indian people have contiuned to vote the BJP-RSS back into power, and parties that you have voted for contiue to support them if they don't get the requisite numbers, and because Laloo Yadav has very little chance of becoming PM of India.

people vote as long as onion prices are low.

Rvikz, no point explaining democratic institutions of India, when someone is adamant not to believe you. And Malik, U mind giving me your source of information re' 75% of Ministers being from BJP. 50% seems like a more digestible figure. Do you also know how many states do BJP rule (is in power) at the moment? YOu will be surprised to know.

Its always easy to give statements once the drama/tragedy is over, what was state machinery doing when it was happening?
