Re: The Why thread. The Why thread

have you ever noticed the busses sneezing? for the same reason we sneeze too...to dislodge minute particle from the upper nose track that escapes the hair-brush lining of the lower nose! :)

did you know that the speed of air when exists nose is 120 ?] miles/hour?

The Why thread

Why is the female voice different from the male voice? Please briefly explain in simple terms, what is it that makes women sound different than men? Is it something to do with the hormones or does the difference arise from the physiology or both?

Re: The Why thread.
The Why thread

^ohhhh..that is a good one!

I think it might be hormones....our ex-president and her mother both sounded like men....if you listened to their voices only...you would never think that they are not men! hmmm..I wonder if that was genetic?!

The Why thread

Why no one comes in this thread ?

The Why thread

The last post was just two days ago. Calm down. Science and tech threads are a little empty on GS.

Re: The Why thread. The Why thread

I’m a little late to the party but here is Richard Feynman’s take on how hard it is to answer a ‘why’ question:

Re: The Why thread.
The Why thread

I would hope physiology includes hormones.

; )

Re: The Why thread. The Why thread

nvm

Not sure about physiology…but if women sounded like men then i am not sure how this procreation thing was going to evolve.

Re: The Why thread.
The Why thread

It has to do with testosterone. The lower the pitch----> the higher the testosterone level.

The pitch is effected by the size of the vocal cords, thicker and longer cords equates to a lower pitch. Rise in testosterone levels is what leads to the thickening and lengthening of cords in males (i.e. voice change during puberty).

Re: The Why thread

Guac, have they found out the need of appendix? I cannot believe nature left us with unused, unneeded parts. What is the use of that?

Re: The Why thread

I don’t believe there is any clear cut answer. The function of the appendix, as of right now, is debatable.

So this is what I know:

The appendix itself contains a lot of lymphoid tissue and ‘good’ bacteria.

I only know of three appendix function theories:

  1. The oldest ‘theory’ is that the appendix actually has no function in modern humans. It is believed that back in the day our diet consisted mostly of bark/leaves and we needed the appendix for the extra digestion help.
-Darwin believed that the appendix was actually once part of the folds in the cecum but with time has shrunk (since we didn’t need it anymore

  2. The second theory is that due to all of the lymphoid tissue present, the appendix has some sort of immune system type function that we haven’t quite figured out yet

  3. The last theory is that the appendix stores a great amount of good bacteria that replenishes the intestines whenever an individual’s existing gut flora is wiped out entirely..i.e. during some sort of illness, severe diarrhea, etc.
-Also connecting point 2 and 3….the lymphoid tissue might be what is encouraging the growth of the good bacteria :hmmm:

Largely it is still a mystery!

Why do we crack our knuckles?!?

Re: The Why thread

Cause it feels good! :hehe:

Good question, seriously it is as if I can’t control it sometimes as soon as I see someone do it I must crack my own knuckles
