Maybe the US should try a similar strategy in the 2008 elections. Everyone living in a town of population > 1773 OR in possession of an IQ > 63 are banned from voting. It would sure help the Republicans out.

Maybe that’s the Sunni strategy. Kill everyone who wants to vote and all that’s left are the low IQ terrorists. They will get their wish, no one left to vote. But by then the Shia are going to have them put in their place.

suddenly the veils arent as oppressive are they? for the same critics, the same people suddenly anyone in a veil doesnt immediately become confined? the woman wearing it doesnt supposedly immediately yearn for freedom, for she comes before the same ballot box America brings forth as a symbol of 'freedom', in that same veil.
if the results here are not doctored, then this will be a massive failure for USA. Simply because they would have installed a government allied with Iran, and right next to it. This government too would be run by Mullahs in proxy (the party expected to win is handpicked by Sistani), and the veils, the beards will remain, the enmity for Israel, the religiously motivated sympathy for Palestinians, all that good stuff will remain.
if the results are doctored, then you can sure that the same people who lined up in droves braving death to nominate their cleric's handchosen leader according to his fatwa, will turn on the Americans.
Sistani has played his hand very well, and the brave Iraqis have backed him.

yes, that is most likely what will happen…an Islamic party in power, reflecting the majority of the country - Shias. however, i don’t believe any of the parties will be an anti-US party, they simply won’t be a pro-US one. and the U.S will settle for that in a heartbeat if it means stability and faster exit.

this would actually be a valid point if anyone claimed that those who not wear veils are hookers, or that Iraqi women always wore veils. Saddam being secular never forced veils on anyone, however a religious government brought about by USA might well do so.
anyway, the same veils that are now paraded as heroines of freedom were infact touted as oppressed and yearning for freedom. the same lady walking on the street infact might be used to make that point.
just goes to show how the same beards and veils are suddenly delightful for the same people who reviled them.

one overt reason offered was that this provides stability to Israel. Toothless, self serving saddam was probably more likely to see interest in abandoning support for the Pals than a religiously motivated government.
if the other reason was that this would encourage ‘freedom’ elsewhere, whatever that means, take Iran for example. the by proxy run ‘elected’ government of clerics is probably going to be reflected in Iraq. This strengthens an Irani government that was shakier than it has ever been. if sistani’s people win this is almost a new Iranian revolution.
