Re: The Spectacular Hijack
All four governors of the newly created state of Pakistan were Knights (3 British & Sir Ghulam Hussian Hidayatullah.) I.I Chundrigar, Jinnah’s confidante from Ahmadabad, Gujrat, who had absolutely no connection with the newly created state, was made the first Trade & Commerce minister. Ghulam Mohammad, an Aligarh graduate and a chartered accountant who was a partner of Mahindra and Mohamed Steel Company in Bombay became the first Finance Minister of Pakistan. Totally ousted from provincial politics of NWFP in the 1946 elections, Sardar Abdur Rab Nishtar, Jinnah’s confidante was made Pakistan’s first Minister for communications. Raja Ghazanfar Ali Khan, a Muslim League deserter in favor of Unionist party earlier and again a Jinnah confidante was made Pakistan’s first Minister for Food Agriculture and Health. Fazal-ur-Rahman, a Jinnah confidante from Dacca, Bengal, with no political base was made the first Minister for Interior, Information and Education. Jogindernath Mandal, another Jinnah confidante and an untouchable from Bengal, after a green signal from Dr. Ambedkar opted for Pakistan. He was made Pakistan’s first Minister of Law.
Liaqat Ali Khan, the Nawab from UP who could not win a single seat in the areas which constituted Pakistan took over as the first Prime Minister of Pakistan. And finally, Mohammad Ali Jinnah who would seldom visit the areas to be included in Pakistan, and remained in Bombay almost all his life, later became the Governor General of Pakistan.
After seizing power, a dirty game of loot and plunder began mainly focusing on the abandoned property of Hindus and Sikhs. (Before Partition, 75% of property & business in Lahore was in the hands of Hindus and Sikhs.) Infighting ensued over securing lucrative portfolios and proxies were mobilized to infiltrate into Kashmir, which became operative in the first week of September 1947. The elected government of NWFP was dismissed on August 22, 1947 by purchasing some members of the provincial assembly. On April 26, 1948, the elected Chief Minister of Sindh Ayub Khuhro was dismissed and Balochistan was forcibly annexed on March 28, 1948. The Punjab assembly was dissolved on January 25, 1949.
On the other hand nothing substantive was done to resettle the refugees, no elections were held for the next 23 years and no stable constitution came into force for the next 26 years. And nothing was done for the landless farmers of East Pakistan to tackle agrarian poverty and public health.
Hence, largely Urdu speaking, English speaking and Gujrati speaking, elitist professionals, industrialists and feudal lords who had absolutely no connection with the man in the street were now calling the shots in the newly created state.
Not only that, they also dictated to Punjabi, Sindhi, Pashto, Balochi and Bengali speaking majority that a superior North Indian culture would play a dominant role in the newly born state and Urdu would be its national language. (54% Pakistanis would speak Bengali vis-a-vis 3.3% Urdu-speaking in 1947.)
The last nail was the passage of the Objectives Resolution presented by Liaqat Ali Khan, which Islamized the character of the state and sealed its fate as a progressive and modern state for all times to come.
History and culture were distorted and recreated to suit the interests of the new rulers who had replaced the English while systematic attempts were made to manufacture a distinct identity from the rest of the Indian sub-continent.
The bandwagon of the corrupt polity was later joined by bureaucrats and khakis and an illusion of freedom from enslavement was created through indoctrination and hate material at all levels- from school curricula to media management.
How long artificial structures last? The Eastern Wing separated in 1971. And how viable is present Pakistan or is it a failed state!
