Perhaps this for the person who is looking for guidance. And not a measure for common people to judge each other ?
For example, a person is convinced about quran, now he/wants to do his own way of going about worshipping allah. so this aya would speak to him directly.
For example, there is an awesome story of very articulate ex-hindu guy, from berhaman family, on youtube.
He got convince by quran, but was finding out his own way to be worshipping allah piece by piece.
In parts. Since it was so hard on him to be muslim like.
Till he came across this aya(in my worlds) “enter in deen as whole”
Also he was guided by such ayat as in title many time, as if quran was speaking to him.
So… you know..
This verse should not be used to conclude that NONE of the followers of other religion will enter in paradise. The 2nd sentence posted by OP is an important one:
Oneness of God is what EVERY religion has taught, regardless of current teachings of that religion. As long as a person is holding on to Oneness of God, there is every bit of chance that he/she will find guidance. Allah has mentioned that only sin that wont be forgiven is Shirk (believing in multiple gods), all other sins can be forgiven. A Christian or Hindu may on surface seem to believe in multiple gods, but it may be that their heart really believes in One God. Only Allah is capable of knowing whats inside a person’s heart and whether they are committing Shirk or not.
But you see the concept in that Verse is further clarified by the following Hadith which the scholars have also used to justify their consensus that anyone other than a Muslim will not enter Paradise:
It is narrated on the authority of Abu Huraira that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) observed:
By Him in Whose hand is the life of Muhammad, he who amongst the community of Jews or Christians hears about me, but does not affirm his belief in that with which I have been sent and dies in this state (of disbelief), he shall be but one of the denizens of Hell-Fire.
Commenting on the above mentioned Hadith, Imam Al-Nawawi, the Shaafi scholar of Hadith says**
وقوله - صلى الله عليه وسلم - لا يسمع بي أحد من هذه الأمة أي ممن هو موجود في زمني وبعدي إلى يوم القيامة فكلهم يجب عليه الدخول في طاعته وإنما ذكر اليهودي والنصراني تنبيها على من سواهما وذلك لأن اليهود والنصارى لهم كتاب فإذا كان هذا شأنهم مع أن لهم كتابا فغيرهم ممن لا كتاب له أولى والله أعلم**
His (sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) saying: No one from this Ummah hears of me meaning from among those who are present in my time and after me until the Day of Judgement, all of them, it is obligatory on them to enter into his obedience and he mentioned the Jews and Christians only to caution against those who belong to other Religions and that is because the Jews and Christians have the Book, so when this is how the affair will be with them despite their having a Book so others who do not have any Book are more worthy of the warning. And Allah knows best.
Its not about it being offensive, its about it being extremely petty. 99% of the religious folks are convinced that the belief they were indoctrinated with during childhood is the correct one. That their manner to pray to god makes sense. Nothing wrong with that.
But when you start ridiculing other religions, saying the followers of those religions will burn in hell, then they will do the same to your religion. Slowly, it will go from being verbal to becoming physical. Not only among different religions, but also among different sects. By stating that everyone else but those who conform to your religion will burn in hell, you are laying the foundation for the mindset which nurtures religious intolerance and extremism.
Its not about such a mindset being offensive, its about it being extremely hurtful for your OWN society.
Lets assume Islam indeed does condemn hindus to hell, then why should the hindu majority in India tolerate and respect Islam? If the hundu majority condemns and criticizes Islam on this notion, that it claims they will burn in hell, then where is the islamophobia in that? To gain respect you have to show respect. If you condemn someone else, then no use in crying foul if they condemn you back.
Such puritanical approach to religion is the very reason why minorities (be it of different sects or religions) in many muslim nations are often oppressed and maltreated.
Such mindset also represses any chance for freedom of religion in muslim nations.
I’m amazed how some, well educated muslims, can not see how they are contributing to the destruction of their own societies.
Can not see why Mr Bhopali was warned for this remark. If anything the opposite notion should be extremely offensive, not to humans but to god himself.
There is a difference in condemning someone of going to hell and physically abusing them. According to Islam all Non-Muslims will burn in Hell but this is not equal to mistreating them in this world. They have rights under an Islamic State. I believe you are equating burning in Hell with mistreatment in this world which is in correct.
Narrated Abdullah bin Amr:
**The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Whoever killed a Mu'ahid (a person who is granted the pledge of protection by the Muslims) shall not smell the fragrance of Paradise though its fragrance can be smelt at a distance of forty years (of traveling).**
^ When you tell someone that they will burn in hell for simply following their religion, you are disrespecting them and their religion. Most people are reluctant to respect or tolerate a belief system which condemns them to hell, or calls them immoral. Also, such a mindset is detrimental to your own society. It doesn’t take long before it goes from being verbal to becoming physical. If you think spreading religious intolerance is a positive thing, then you should not complain when the same intolerance and hatred comes back to haunt you.
I don’t! Someone christian nut can tell me I will go to hell, I won’t be losing any sleep over it.
Try to hurt a Muslim brother of mine or sister, and I - if were in a position of authority - would send an army to teach a lesson you would not forget!
Why would they be nuts for telling you that, if you are telling the same to them? Also, army is what has been sent in Pakistan to “teach a lesson”, did it resolve anything?
