yeaaa. goldeneye and half-life played a huge part in changing the fps genre but Deus Ex had its own role too. you really can choose how you play it- with stealth or just blasting your way through, just following the main dialogue or reading every email, newspaper, book. such a well researched and deep game for its time. it’s amazing how much vision warren spector had for the way the world go. you read some of the newspaper snippets and it’s exactly like post 9-11 stuff (obv more extreme tho). and excerpts of ‘The Man who was Thursday’. the nanotechnology stuff was really well done too (speaking from someone who works in the field).
too bad they dumbed everything down for Deus Ex 2.
