Re: The Last Film You Saw

I just watched ‘Provoked: A True Story’ on YouTube. It raises a very important issue of abuse within marriage and how when a female does something back to escape more abuses in the future, she often gets the blame and punishment.

Abuse in marriage is still a big problem in many places in the world. Horrible mother-in-laws are a huge part of this problem, I’m not saying all mother-in-laws and all husbands are horrible and criminal, some are nice people of course, but many are definitely horrible mental and physical abusers of wives and daughters-in-laws.

When females open their mouth, they get all the blame and everyone is angry at them for telling someone to ask help, their mouth is closed by their family to save “izzat”. Inlaws often say a daughter-in-law should shut up about whatever she suffers for the izzat of the inlaws. Even parents of the female often don’t want her to tell about the abuse, that way the female doesn’t get help and the abuse continues. And many people, even females often say “all men are like that, all husbands beat up their wives, it’s normal, shut up, stop complaining about that and be a good wife and be thankful for your husband”. That’s literally what a Pakistani Aunty in Rotterdam told me some years ago, she’s not family but a family friend. She’s not the only one who often said these things, I’ve been hearing this for years from several females both in and out of our family. They even say a good Muslima takes the abuse of her husband in sabr, she accepts that life in sabr and does nothing against it. Well, there is a limit for everything. Sabr doesn’t mean the wife has to suffer from horrible abuse. Even in Islam the wife is allowed to have a life without abuse from her husband and inlaws. It’s wrong even in Islam to abuse your wife or daughter-in-law. I don’t know where our Pakistani (and even many Indian people) get these traditional ideas from that males can do anything horrible they want, it’ll be allright but the female should be quiet always and accept every abuse in “sabr”. That’s not Islamic sabr anymore, in Islam you are definitely allowed to safe yourself, to try to get out of an abusive situation so nobody can harm you again.

Anyway, people often hate to admit we have this issue in our society, they don’t like to admit we have it, they don’t want to do something about it, just blame the females and that’s it. Some Pakistani even said I was giving Pakistan a bad name whenever I raised this issue. How is addressing a serious problem giving a country a bad name… Besides, this happens everywhere in the world. Even some Dutch, French, African and Bulgarian females I met throughout the years were being abused. I never said this only happens in Pakistan or India. However, since we are Pakistani (and in my case also Dutch since I’m born in Holland) we look to our own society first. It’s normal.

This true story shows the terrible truth and teaches us to do something about it, to stop it. Tomorrow it could be you or your own sister or your own daughter , think about it and start adressing this problem. We should all do someting about it and find a solution.
