To answer the thread Muzna I'd disarm them with your charm. Then leave them helpless for responses with your wit.
Personally, I'd go either two extremes. I'd completely sympathise with whatever they're complaining about. Misery loves company but I'd go 2 steps further
and exaggerate the complaints. Even they will think ok going overboard and then they will retract their statements.
The other extreme id go to is I'd compliment them to the nth degree and mention what I admire them. There are things to admire about everyone. This would distract them especially when put on a pedestal.they may even run away. I feel people who always complain are actually looking for validation and acknowledgment. Maybe they feel they have been neglected. If it's an older person id get them to recount a happy story of the past.

Someone close to me can get huge on laying out criticism (when stressed, i think :S)
It is not easy to deal with when a) you're the victim and b) they are unfounded/only true some of the time. I find a way to leave the room or engage in conversation with someone else. Once in a while I lose patience and say something. Sometimes they stop, sometimes we end up getting into an argument that ends with me walking away out of anger.

Deflect and distract like your life depends on it. Always find a positive spin or introduce your own negative experience.
example 1:
Person 1 says, "That girl is so short." (I give a wtf look). I reply, "Allah ki marzi but she has pretty eyes. If she were taller I wouldn't be able to see them." "Really, I haven't noticed." "Hmm, all the talls girls I know don't wear the pretty, high heels so she has an advantage there."
example 2:
Person 2 says, "My DIL makes tea that looks like boiled water." I reply, "Isn't all tea boiled water? I hate it. Let me tell you all the ways I hate tea."
example 3:
Person 2 says (They really don't like their DIL), "My grandchildren are so dumb (DIL's fault)." I reply, "What's the point of being smart in this day and age. Let me gripe about my class fellow who took 7 years to complete his degree and now has a job in germany where he makes more than me. wah!!!"
All incidents are all those I've had to experience. bah.

Muz if it's not an old person try to condidee what is behind that if some problems are going on kike divorce infertility rishta.....if no reason, then don't take that crap from anyone. Old people get a get out of jail free card in my opinion as they should

Yup I had a cantankerous older person in my life always complaining, it used to drive me bonkers. Now I would give an arm and a leg just to see her complain once again. Love them, give them a hug. No one is perfect, love them with their perfect little flaws. In the end you will be thankful that you did all you could and made their life happier.
