PESHAWAR: An intense gun-battle erupted between two banned militant groups in Khyber Agency’s Tirah Valley on Friday, with at least 24 militants so far killed in the clash.

Intelligence officials said the gun-battle started late Thursday between the proscribed Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and rival group Ansarul Islam (AI) in Tirah Valley’s Maidan village. The dead included 15 Ansar fighters and nine TTP militants, while several others were also injured.

Officials said the death toll was likely to increase as the fighting had not yet ended.

Speaking to a Dawn.com reporter, Sadat Afridi, a spokesman for the banned Ansarul Islam group, claimed that they had captured over three TTP bases in the valley’s Maidan village, and that the fight was still on for a fourth base.

Afridi said that his group has vowed to flush out TTP militants from Tirah Valley as they “carry out attacks on mosques and public places, which is against Islam.”

Afridi said that they would not allow the TTP to continue “killing innocent Muslims in the name of religion.”

Khyber is among Pakistan’s seven semi-autonomous tribal districts near the Afghan border, rife with homegrown insurgents and home to religious extremist organisations including the al Qaeda.

The remote Tirah valley holds strategic significance for militant groups. On one side, it shares a border with Afghanistan. On the other it leads to the plains of Bara, which connect the agency to the outskirts of Peshawar.

Khyber also links several agencies to each other, serving as a north-south route within Fata. The region has been long fought over by a mix of militant organisations, including the TTP, the Ansarul Islam and Mangal Bagh’s Lashkar-i-Islam.

Both the Ansar and its rival Lashkar-i-Islam group – which was formed in Dec 2005 as a counter outfit to Pir Saifur Rehman’s Ansarul Islam organisation in Dec 2005 – have until now had a tacit agreement with the TTP.

But a spokesman for the TTP-allied Lashkar-i-Islam, Abdul Rashid Lashkari said that they were going to stay neutral in AI-TTP skirmishes. “We are not participating despite our affiliation to the TTP and our grudges with Ansarul Islam.”

Re: Terrorist Attacks in Pakistan - 2013

On the day when the nation celebrates the birth of a prophet, these merciless terrorists target innocent civilians and police officers who work hard to protect ordinary citizens. It is despicable to see these ruthless enemies, who do not even care about the sanctity of the blessed day. They kill without remorse and proudly claim responsibility. We send our heartfelt condolences to the family of the brave police officers and innocent civilians killed in these senseless attacks. We support the Pakistani People as they tackle this menace head-on. We have no doubts that goodness will prevail over evil.

Pro-govt militia attacked in Dera Bugti; one killed, five kidnapped | Pakistan | DAWN.COM

QUETTA: Dozens of armed men raided a pro-government tribal militia post in Balochistan on Saturday, killing one man and abducting five, officials said.
**
The early morning raid took place in Dera Bugti district, about 400 kilometres southeast of provincial capital Quetta, they said.
“Armed men believed to be several dozens attacked the post and whisked away five members of the tribal force in their vehicles after forcing them to surrender,” provincial chief secretary Akbar Durrani told AFP.
One man who resisted was shot dead by the assailants, he said.

Local administration chief Syed Faisal Shah confirmed the raid, saying security forces had been rushed to the area and a search operation had been launched.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack.

The government set up a lightly armed tribal force, known locally as a peace force, to help security forces tackle militant violence in the region.

Balochistan is rife with militancy and is home to a regional insurgency the latest phase of which began in 2004. The insurgents demand political autonomy and a greater share of profits from the province’s oil and gas resources.
The province has also become a flashpoint for sectarian violence.

Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf earlier this month sacked the provincial government in Balochistan after meeting Shia protesters demanding protection after a huge bomb attack that killed 92 people.

Re: Terrorist Attacks in Pakistan - 2013

The enemy’s main agenda is to keep the region destabilized. We saw today the suicide attacks on the Bannu police, and the roadside bomb attacks on peace committee members from Khyber. We condemn these attacks and send our condolences to the families of the dead.

Pakistanis are resilient against terrorism and we strongly stand by with them as they fight out this evil of terrorism that has plagued them for years now.
