Tell us about a book!!!

re: Tell us about a book!!!

Sidra, tell me u cried at the end :(

re: Tell us about a book!!!

I wanted to cry...i kept expressing my sorrow to my sister and friend. At first the story was going along so well that i did not want it to end, but when it finally did, i kept thinking about it for days.

re: Tell us about a book!!!

me, my hubby my mother …my sisters …cousins everyone has read it!!
umaira is my fav. these days …!!

re: Tell us about a book!!!

^^^ I read her last peice in Feb in some digest named Darbar -e- Dil. It was really nice and touching. Her reference to God is lightly put yet so effective. Try n read Darbar e Dil if you get a chance. (Feb 05-khawateen digest, I believe.)

re: Tell us about a book!!!

Umera Ahmed's "la-hasil" and "amar bail" are the best ones. Better than "peer-e-kamil". They're going to show the drama based on la-hasil and I am anxiously waiting for it!!

commy: darbar-r-dil is the new novel of umera?

re: Tell us about a book!!!

ummm...i don't read khawateen digest etc. .....but usually when she writes something real good my sisters either save those pages for me , bind n send to me ....or they wait for the complete book to get published(like peer-e-kaamil) n send me

so i did read la-hasil ....but will ask for all her books whenever i get a chance...:)

re: Tell us about a book!!!

Mindo-- as far as I remember, yes its titled darbar e dil by umera ahmed in the feb edition of one of the monthly digests (khawateen i believe). Actually a cousin gave it to me to read just to take my mind off the exams  It was a good read :k: I havent read la hasil…and can’t recall the story of amar bail …

Hope u can find the one I’m talking bout.

Sidra-- ur rite, the story kept revolving in my mind for a couple of days too. Has he written any other books worth the read?

Afia-- yeah I read peer e kamil thru my flight – bought it for ammi and well I thought I should finish it before handing it over

re: Tell us about a book!!!

"The Rule of Four" by Ian Cadwell & Duston Thomson.

it's a tale about two under graduate students who take "Hypnerotomachia Poliphili" as thier thesis and end up resolving the coded messages in the book and in the end it leads to something bigger they never thought of! a good read; a bit of exaggeration like most writers do.

re: Tell us about a book!!!

im very interested in islamic history and islamic heroes, so can you guys recommend any good book or good author? how about maulana maududi or israr ahmad? any good books they written?

re: Tell us about a book!!!

I read Family Matters, although a good story but does not live up to ** A Fine Balance **. Family Matters looks more deeply into the lives of the Parsi community while pointing out the flaws in the Indian government.

re: Tell us about a book!!!

The laws of evening by Mary yukari waters

lovely collection of short stories

re: Tell us about a book!!!

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

Awesome readings. I recommend it to everyone. :k:

re: Tell us about a book!!!

anyone read Amin Maalouf's works?

re: Tell us about a book!!!

One Hundered Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez is an absolutely mind blowing book. He is the winner of Nobel prize for literature and Bookers prize as well.

Higly imaginative writer.

I love Tess of the D’Urberville by Thomas Hardy.

re: Tell us about a book!!!

^ I agree, one hundred years of solitude is tremendous … I read it a long time ago … but glad someone brought it up … its time for a reread.

another good one I rememberd is … The red tent by anita diamant

Just finished The kite runner … :k:

re: Tell us about a book!!!

Althea! I need to go and read it again as well.

re: Tell us about a book!!!

I hear Tehmina Durrani is a Salman Rushdie in Bangladesh...she supposedly got attacked when she came to the UK...well what those fools dont realise it brings her publicity and then their books get sold...hey im going to buy it now.
One book i recommend is Untouchable...a novel about the life of an Untouchable/Dalit and his adverse treatment...a nice book...not the pity story that you expect....
By the way does anyone know any good books on Muslim clash of cultures...im currently reading Hanif Kureishis the Black Album which is a good title...but its UK based where i live so i know...
So does anyone know of any Pakistani books related to the issues between youth and the clash between modernity and traditionalism...preferably fiction but im happy to read non fiction books as well...
Thanks

re: Tell us about a book!!!

Some of my all time favorites are :

The Kite Runner by Khalid Hosseini: I read this book this summer, a few months before it hit the NY times Bestsellers list and before everyone on the subway who wasn't reading The Da Vini Code had this book in their hands. Beautiful and simply written prose about life in Afghanistan...before and after the Taliban. About a friend who was able to leave and a friend who was left behind. Okay I gotta admit: I am biased as this book mentioned my home city of Peshawar. No seriously, this is a great read.

The Chamber ( my all time favorite book from John Grisham and I have read them all except his newest The Broker) made me some what understand the roots of Ku Klux Klan and a great portrayal of life on death row)

The secret history by Donna Tartt ( Somewhat reminiscent of Dead Poet's Society, a bit gothic, and inlaid with sophisticated psychology, it takes place on and around the campus of a small, private, Vermont liberal arts college) I completely fell in love with the 523 pages of debut novel by a Mississippi author

Last but by no means the least: The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova'. I just finished this last week, what a rare rare treat. Where Da vinci Code was a double shot of Espresso, Historian is a finally brewed cup of exquisite Qhawa( green tea) with tons of Laachee. The theme of the book is the quest for Dracula and don't get mislead by the title folks thinking,oh the same old same old. This is one fine debut novel. I remember some one recommending a book about Ottomans on this thread, The Historian has lot of reference to Ottomans.

re: Tell us about a book!!!

Infinite Jest, by David Foster Wallace. It's a commitment, but it's well worth it. Undoubtedly my favorite novel of all time.

re: Tell us about a book!!!

Okay, have to mention another favorite of mine as well: **Prep by Curtis](http://curtis) Sittenfeld](http://sittenfeld).
Here the Publisher Weekly review for it: A self-conscious outsider navigates the choppy waters of adolescence and a posh boarding school’s social politics in Sittenfeld’s A-grade coming-of-age debut. The strong narrative voice belongs to Lee Fiora, who leaves South Bend, Ind., for Boston’s prestigious Ault School and finds her sense of identity supremely challenged. Now, at 24, she recounts her years learning “everything I needed to know about attracting and alienating people.” Sittenfeld neither indulges nor mocks teen angst, but hits it spot on: “I was terrified of unwittingly leaving behind a piece of scrap paper on which were written all my private desires and humiliations. The fact that no such scrap of paper existed… never decreased my fear.” Lee sees herself as “one of the mild, boring, peripheral girls” among her privileged classmates.
*Here is my persoanl review with a Desi twist: Imagine you are a Jutt dehathee kruhi ( but one with brains)from some dinky ghawoo in Punjab, your town doesn’t even have proper name, its Chuck# some thing, your beloved Aba jee and Maa Jee are good people but dirt poor, then by some miracle you get admission to KC in Lahore on a full scholarship ( imagine KC to be a very expensive private school where only rich bitches attend high school , stretch your imagination and picture KC as a co-ed school where all the cool guys like the guys from GC Lahore go to school)
Hopefully you get the picture. Y’all have to excuse me if my reference to KC and GC are out dated( it’s been 10 years since I became an ex-patriot)

It’s one hell of a read and very witty.
