re: Tell us about a book!!!
I read this a few years ago:
La Prisonniere By Malika Oufkir (true story)
As the daughter of the King of Morocco’s closest aide, she grew up enjoying all of the privileges of royalty. But this quickly changed for Malika Oufkir when her father attempted to assassinate the king. As a result, Oufkir, her mother and five brothers and sisters must live in a desert jail for 15 years. With no contact with the outside world and living in inhumane conditions, Oufkir somehow manages to keep her sanity and sense of humour intact. La Prisonniere is her remarkable story.
re: Tell us about a book!!!
Must reads (in my opinion):
Man and Boy - Tony Parsons
The Testament - John Grisham
The Street Lawyer - John Grisham
The River God - Wilbur Smith
The Seventh Scroll - Wilbur Smith (if you are going to read it, read The River God first...)
The Dandelion Clock - Guy Burt
Needful Things - Stephen King
Insomnia - Stephen King
Bag of Bones - Stephen King
The Lovely Bones - Alice Sebold
This Lullaby - Sarah Dessen
Dreamland - Sarah Dessen
Summer Sisters - Judy Blume
im reading the first book of The Cairo Trilogy (by Naguib Mahfouz), its called Palace Walk... really good book so far...
re: Tell us about a book!!!
The street Lawyer by Grisham is great!
re: Tell us about a book!!!
If I were to choose a single book by Tony Parsons, it would be Man and Wife. If you like Sarah Dessen and Judy Blume, you might also like Billie Letts and Elizabeth Berg.
re: Tell us about a book!!!
"Catcher in the Rye" by J.D. Salinger.
It is by far the greatest book ever written.
re: Tell us about a book!!!
I finished the U.S.A. Trilogy by John Dos Passos. It's quite an undertaking to read all three at once (about 1200 pages in total), but I would definitely recommend starting with "The 42nd Parallel." The 2nd and 3rd books are titled "1919" and "The Big Money," respectively.
The trilogy spans the course of the 1910s, through WWI and the 1920's, and finally comes to an end with the economic decline in the late 20s. Dos Passos employs a somewhat detached 3rd person narrative that follows a vast cast of characters as their lives converge (and sometimes collide) during this time period, and is often interupted with modernistic portraits that convey contemporary culture and fable-like biographies of real-life Americans. The trilogy is terribly underrated and deserves to stand with anything Fitzgerald and Hemmingway produced during the same period.
I just began David Foster Wallace's latest collection of essays "Consider the Lobster," and I am nearly finished with it as well. I can't recommend this collection enough. IMO, DFW is the best American writer of at least the past couple of decades, and this collection is even better than I anticipated. To give you an idea of how unbelievably talented this guy is, I was absolutely enthralled by a 57 page essay on English language usage. The man has a fresh perspective on EVERYTHING and can make ANYTHING interesting.
re: Tell us about a book!!!
Great book. “Vine of Desire” is the sequel to this book. Pretty good, but not as great as the first one

Another great read. Not only were they in a desert jail away from people, but they were also separated from each other by a wall. I wonder if they made a movie out of this. Seems like good movie material.
re: Tell us about a book!!!
Just finished "Tuesdays with Morrie" by Mitch Albom.
Very short, but a lot of material for thought and self-evaluation crammed into it.
Good read when you haven't the time to commit to something long and drawn out.
Prior to this I finished "The DaVinci Code" by Dan Brown. If you're going to read it and you aren't an art enthusiast, then definitely invest in the illustrated version......makes a huge difference. Good story with a few twists.
I liked the way it revealed important historical facts as the story went along.
re: Tell us about a book!!!
I just finished reading The Penelopiad by Margaret Atwood, a retelling of the events of Homer’s Odyssey from the now-dead Penelope.
It is a good read and fun, though heavy-handed often. Seems to be for a younger audience, I suppose. The beginning chapter and the last few are the most interesting. The occasional commentary on modern life seems forced and cliche. Overall, interesting, though I think Atwood is capable of better.:tamaatar:

Re: Book Suggestion Needed
I've read a lot of John Grisham.
Recently finished the DaVinci Code by Brown.
Also finished Tuesday's with Morrie by Albom.
3/4 of the way through Fasting, Feasting.
I loved Brown and Albom. Not too queen on the last one.
I prefer books that incorporate fact with fiction......like DaVinci Code.

The Fundamentals of of Islam by Abu Al'a Maududi...
I am reading it nowadays, and Alhumdulillah, it's given me the insight and courage to give up a few bad habits of mine...
