Even if we make sure that our kids understand Urdu, what are the chances of their kids being the same? For those who have moved out of Pakistan; to expect the 3rd and 4th generation to still be speaking the native language is probably expecting a bit too much. If it happens, great. If not, just live with it.

We only spoke Urdu at home, i learned english wheN i started kindergarten. my accent has been made fun of so many times, that i just don't even bother to speak urdu with anyone other than my family and in laws.

Im supposedly an ABCD but our primary language is Urdu...Im pretty sure my kids will learn Urdu first like myself.
Thats how I want it to be.

In our house me and my eldest brother grew up speaking urdu in a joint family system.. when we moved to another city adn had no on to converse with in urdu we totally dropped it and could just understand it.....
My parents than got urdu satellite and I must say that kinda helped....;when we went to Pakistan for the first time...I picked up urdu very fast..unfortunately my bros didnt..
Now i am fluent in urdu and am attempting punjabi!
