I teach those grades. Here’s what I did for my demo. I took a short story (u can also pick an article) and selected words or phrases from it that sounded interesting. I wrote these words on strips of paper and placed them in an envelope. I put the students in groups and gave each group an envelope. The students had to open the envelope and take out the words and phrases and predict what the story was about based in those words. It’s a pre-reading strategy. Call on them to share the predictions and then have them read the story to themselves and discuss it afterwards. You can also pick a non-fiction article and do an anticipaory set…which is where you give the students a bunch of statements based in the article and they have to decide whether the statement is true or false. While reading the article they’ll get to see if their answers were right. It’s another pre-reading strategy.

Try to have the students work in pairs or or small groups. Administrators (principals, etc) are impressed by cooperative learning and seeing students discussing the lesson/concepts with their peers. The lesson not only becomes interactive, the learning is more student-facilitated as opposed to the typical direct-teaching method where the teacher is droning on and on for the next 45 minutes while students try hard to pay attention. Some lessons will require direct teaching, but from what I’ve seen the admin is more impressed by student facilitated learning and it looks good cuz the students are actively engaged.
