my sisters and i remember when our parents would drink tea in other people's home, we would always wonder what the taste was like and felt well left out esp' when us kids wouldn't get anything! lol!
one of my appa's doesn't drink tea but she will have it if someone offer's it to her in their home - then appa will let her kids have a sip or dip their biscuits in it. at least they won't feel left out and dipping biscuits in tea is well fun for them! there's no harm in a sip once in a blue moon.
but then i know some parents refuse to let their kids taste tea but gulp down cups, which isn't fair. if you want to teach your kids to eat and drink healthy - then set an example first.
good point
My parents never gave us tea as little kids but my mom would occassionally let me dip cake rusks into her tea and eventually her tea would be ruined, but that way I wasn't left wondering what this "tea" is that they won't let me have. So it turned out that I quite disliked the taste of tea for years until towards the end of highschool when I wanted something other than milk in the morning so that I could stay up for my classes :D. I also remember my nana spoiling us by secretly giving us chai that he used to make when we were little but of course I only wanted it to dunk my cake rusks!
My husband's family is a chai/tea addict! OMG i have never in my life seen people who have tea that many times in a day , but luckily I have convinced my husband to cut down to one cup a day by substituting chai with green tea. :)
My rents would never give us tea but my grandparents would make us drink tea from the saucer...sigh miss being a kid.
haha I remember my nana and my great grandma used to let us do that , but it was only for show and soon I would quickly just dip a whole bunch of biscuits or whatever and ruin it
good times
Re: Tea for the kids ...
there is only so much you can do to protect them from coffee tea carbonated beverages and other junk crap... once they do try it out even when they are 14, hey.. can get hooked. sure its not gonna be as bad as a 2 yr old havign a latte :D
its the same theory as what should be the first food be for a baby.. veggy or fruit.. some ppl say hey start with veggy since they wont knwo anything better exists.. but once they start on fruits cuz they wil´l eventually, its a 50 50 chance that ure kid will prefer fruits to veggies.. so there really is no hard adn fast rule to say.. dont start them on something at an early age, that u dont want them to start liking. they will at soem point drink tea. and love it.
my son is 13 months and no he doesnt drink tea.. but i do dunk his toast in it sometimes at bfast... sometimes i dunk it in milk... the good thign bout a kid that isnt too crazy bout eating to begin with is... well.. they could care less what thery are eating .. as long as they are done with the chore fast :D
i hate tea and coffee myself but still want tea to dip my toast in for bfast.
Re: Tea for the kids ...
A lot of pple here are saying they "grew" up on taking sips of tea etc from elders and it did them no harm... that's not the point...
If you know something is BAD ,then why even give a tiny bit of that thing??? We all know tea / coffee / fizzy drinks are bad for you, so why give them in small amounts??
My parents never gave us "sips" of tea / coffee, and in turn, my niece and nephew are not allowed either... although their parents do drink tea / coffee... fizzy drinks are a big no no in our house too. Why would you put something "bad" into your child's body, no matter how small the amount??
....and just for the record... it is NOT the tea bag in that cup of milk that soothes the throat.. it's the hot drink... so why add the tea bag???
Each to their own I guess....
nahhh its a desi thing… the funny thing is I don’t even like chai. I have a cup a week.

bad is relative - so is sugar, candy, chocolates, refined carbs, fat, french fries, nihari, cake, frosting... i think it is about porportion.
I beg to differ (from own personal experience) about the soar throat. Milk is known to build more flem in a soar throat. So if you have a child with post nasal drip or flemy throat - hot milk is not good for that. Hot tea with a touch of honey and lemon does help.
Re: Tea for the kids …
Yeah I agree with njgal actually … coz even in olden times elders used to use tea as a medicine for kids .. to warm them up and during flu and fever … i guess it only becomes a problem when kids start having it as a habit from quite an early age …![]()
Re: Tea for the kids ...
Tea isn't bad folks. Research actually shows that tea is good for you in many ways. It has antioxidant properties. We desis cook tea to death...that's another thing, but still it's benefits are great especially during flu. Giving a little to the kids to help ease a sore throat isn't as bad as giving them donuts and candy on a daily basis. Or even juice that is loaded with sugar.
Re: Tea for the kids ...
Nope tea or any caffinated drink is not allowed for my son, he used to ask us for his 'chai' we used to give him milk, he got hooked on to milk so now with our chai he has milk (kids like to copy parents) My sis she allows her son either flower teas or warm water with honey and lemon to make lemon tea :) Its whatever parents get their kids used to having(FOR THE MOST PART ALTLEAST)
