I think what the article meant is he was competing with Bari for wicketkeeper position. Bari was so good he was kept out.

India had Syed Kirmani waiting in the wings for years cause Farokh engineer kept him out.

That era was great for keepers - Marsh Murray Knott Bari Engineer Kirmani

You are right in that era, every team had specialist keeper.

But in current cricket only the team has some nice batting keeper, can go on top. Like Aussies had Gil Christ, India Dhoni etc…
