Found some more tribute for Ashfaq Ahmed, courtesy jang.

[thumb=H]Ashfaq17058_5385020.JPG[/thumb]

For those who cant read urdu, here it is briefly...

**" In 1961 Ashfaq Ahmed gave an idea of a radio programe containing bit of humor and satire on social evils. With only two characters, Ashafaq Ahmed as Talqeen Shah and Hidayat-ullah his servent. Initially they thought it would run for two, three weeks but it became Asia's 1 one and world's second longest running radio feature programe( 39 years ) !!!

In those days when tv was not around, radio was the popular medium. People use to gather in hotels and tea shops to listen Talqeen Shah. People loved and adored this character and used to memorise his pet dialogues. The popularity of that programe crossed border and Talqeen Shah became loved the respected character in india .... "**

I my self just heard 2 or 3 programes being quite young at that time, was not aware of its popularity. May be someone who heard it share some views.

It is a tradition that when some important figure dies, newspaper, radio, tv and other media pay homage for their services.

In one interview Ashfaq Ahmed discussing that programe told the incident quite humoursly that once 10~15 years ago he got sick and could not go to radio station for some days. As he was the writer, producer and main character of the show, the station director and crew got woried and started praying for his health.

When he got better and went to radio station crew was overjoyed. He sensed the feeling and asked ' yaar jab main mar jaoon ga tu phir tum log kia karoo gay, tum logon ko tu bari mushkil par jai gi ' . So he himself arranged and made the programe that the radio should on air after his death to pay him tribute , so that people wont have difficulty gathering clips and record of 50 years :)

That is so touching. Simple, and elegant.

Thanks for opening this thread, Code_Red. :k:

Talqeen Shah falls silent

LAHORE- Renowned writer, playwright and intellectual Ashfaq Ahmad commonly known as Talqeen Shah breathed his last on Tuesday morning after a protracted illness. He was 80. The celebrated literary figure was suffering from cancer and was under treatment at a private hospital for quite some time. Ashfaq Ahmad was very popular among the masses as Talqeen Shah, an immortal character, which put on different masks of evil in the society and won great accolades from his audience especially on Radio Pakistan.

His decades-long contributions for radio and TV are beyond any measures and would be remembered in literary circles. Ashfaq Ahmad shot to fame as a literary figure in his early age and then joined electronic media right from the time it was launched in Pakistan.
Ashfaq Ahmad’s condition deteriorated on Tuesday morning. He was being taken to the hospital around 8 a.m but died on his way before he could be given medical aid.

He is survived by a widow and three sons- Anees, Asheer and Aneek, who left for America few hours before his death.

The news of Ashfaq Ahmad’s death spread like jungle fire in the City.
His admirers, family friends, literary, social, religious and political figures gathered at his residence to offer condolence to the bereaved family. He was buried the same evening at the Model Town graveyard.

Ashfaq Ahmad was born on 22 August 1925 at Ferozepur (India), though he his father originally belonged to Khairpur in District Hoshyarpur (India) and was posted there at that time. He did his Masters in Italian language from Italy in the decade of 1950’s. As a short-story writer and playwright, Ashfaq Ahmad was a naturalist who loved romances and nature.

His short stories reveal that there is much more to life than misery and woe - there is beauty and loveliness. His short story, Gaddarya (shepherd) brought him fame as a great short story writer in the generation of fiction writers that appeared on the literary scene after the creation of Pakistan. He blended romanticism with realism in his early works. He wrote, produced and acted in a popular weekly radio feature, Talqeen Shah, for more than quarter of a century that became an icon in Pakistan’s broadcasting history. Ashfaq Ahmad’s contribution to television drama ranges from Eik Muhabbat So Afsane, one of the most popular series of Pakistan Television in the early 70s, to Tota Kahani in the 80s. Ashfaq turned to religion in his later writings and portrayed the character “Babajee” in mystical terms. No doubt he himself was a mystic and sufi who preached the high values of sufism i.e. love, tolerance, accommodation. Lately he delivered special lecture on PTV and was also a distinguished speaker at Nazria Paksitan Foundation functions at Aiwan-e-Karkunan Tewhrik-e-Pakistan. He taught at the Dayal Singh College and then went to Iran to teach there. After his return, he launched his own journal. He once wrote a small story and there was one sentence which was much more elegent than usual; simpler than complex definition and thesis of scholars on the very concept of two stages of a muslim.

"Musalman woh jo khudaa ko maantaa hai, aur Momin woh hai jo Khudaa kee maantaa hai."

^ that was his speciality… when he talked, it was in so simple and attractiive that people were compelled to listen.

If anyone is interested in his work here you can find it. Also paksn is also present

Very sad news, we have been hearing that name for so long. His contributions to Pakistan will never be forgotten.

Innalilahe wa inna alehe rajeoun.

I remember looking forward every week to listening to Talqeen Shah on Radio Pakistan Alami Service - just so to the point and in such a hilarious manner.

Does anyone know if Radio Pakistan has made a tape or Cd of his radio programme? I hereby propose that R. Pak does so if not already done. I for one would certainly buy the recording.

inna lillahae wa inna ilaihae rajaeeon

I just saw this thread. He was a great writer.
