Swiss court orders $2.4 million returned to Pakistan

It’s a relatively small sum that is being returned, but it is a start, and one that again proves how corrupt BB and Zardari were.

Swiss court orders $2.4 million returned to Pakistan

In response to a Mutual Legal Assistance (MLA) request from the Government of Pakistan, a court in Geneva has ordered back to Pakistan approximately US $2.4 million seized from the account of DARGAL Associated SA and held in Cantrade Ormond Burrus Banque Privee SA (now Ferrier Lullin et Cie SA) in Geneva. The request for the instant MLA was made in 1997, which called for banking information and other evidence of the said sum with DARGAL Associated SA. The Swiss government froze the account and passed on relevant information to Pakistan. In 1998, the LHC Ehtesab Bench to a case accusing former prime minister Benazir Bhutto, her husband Asif Zardari and others of taking bribes and undue pecuniary advantage in the form of commissions and kickbacks in the purchase of Ursus tractors from Poland.

It was also stated that the contract was given in violation of laws and procedures, which caused a loss to the Agricultural Development Bank of Pakistan and the Central Board of Revenue and that a bank account in Switzerland in the name of DARGAL Associated SA, an offshore company, had been used to receive the commissions and kickbacks. On November 18, 2003 an examining magistrate in Geneva accepted Pakistan’s request and ordered the return of US $2,390,133 from the account of DARGAL Associated SA along with the accrued interest, to Pakistan. She said the file established beyond any doubt that these commissions, under the cover of alleged ‘consultancy fees’ were meant to remunerate the illicit advantages obtained by Ursus from the Pakistani administration on the intervention of Zardari. She said the Bhutto couple could file claims there (in Pakistan) on the assets at stake. “They will be transferred to the benefit of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan at their current value, up to the amount of the undue commissions paid by Ursus, ie US$2,390,133 in principal along with accrued interests.

definetly these corrupt rulers have been exposed yet again. the bhuttos are not the first corrupt clan and not the last either.

but like you say its a start and better than nothing, the people of pakistan suffer without food and many cannot even afford basic medicines, while these corrupt rulers behave like rich sheikhs throwing away the money which belongs to the people!
