My two cents.
All planets follow Kepler's 3rd law or motion, so when they are closer to the Sun, they move faster. It is one car overtaking another car and giving you the impression that the slower car is going backwards. Retrograde motion is nothing but an optical illusion. No one is reversing direction.
Earth's rotation on its axis is conserved (conservation of angular momentum) and it will only change if some external force acts on it.
The hadith also states that the sunrise in the west will be preceded by three days of darkenss. I am thinking solar eclipse due to the presence of some huge ass asteroid which will block the sun and pull earth closer to it by gravitational pull.
Anyways, whatever...just a thought.
