Niksik, im starting up a program(with other teachers) for Parents to be more aware of the dangers of the sun…an the importance of protecting young children from the sun
redvelvet thnx alot ur post has been very helpful, but r u sure about the sun cream every 5 hours? on my sun block bottle, it says every 20 min:confused:
stoppit the hardest thing for us is to get our parents on board especially the ones from asian an black back grounds they seem to think their children dont need sun cream on becoz their skin is not white…
Aishy its very important we all put on sun cream, an children’s skin is so sensitive when they are young, an can easily get damaged. An can even lead to skin cancer later on in life…so make sure ur wearing sun cream at all times…
fbi there is sun in UK, from past two weeks (minus the last two days) I lov the Sun…
CE, it is very important for childrean to wear sunscreen. I remember I'm told this at every annual check up for the kids. And we've been doing that since they were babies.
But yes, I think an awareness program is in order and unless parents especially those from the backgrounds you mentioned aren't educated on the benefits, they will not actively participate.
Of course ultimately the safetly and health of a child is the parents' responsibility. But while the child is in the care of the teacher, the teacher does have some responsibility as well.
Like for example, if they are going to the park or on a field trip where they will outside all day, the teacher should inform the parents beforehand so the kids can dress accordingly. Before going out, the teacher should remind the kids about hats and stuff and give them time to put on their sunscreen before heading out. If the kids are young and the teacher sees they are having difficulty, they should help them apply it
When I was working in a summer camp, sunscreen was on the list of supplies that each parent was obliged to send to school each day with the child. The teacher also had an extra bottle with them just in case. Before heading out the kids were always given time to apply their cream and the teachers always helped the little kids apply it correctly

CE** , it could depend on the brand of sunscreen. I’ve used several sunscreens (banana boat, Obagi, Aveeno, etc). And I’ve read the back labels and it does not say on any of my sunscreens that it should be reapplied every 20 minutes. I didn’t see anything like that on the Internet either. You can double check on the internet or simply follow product instructions. However if it says that it should be reapplied every 20 minutes…then perhaps it’s not strong enough. And frequent touching of face (after only 20 minutes) can lead to acne.
Sunscreen needs to be reapplied after exercise (sweating) and coming out of water. And it should be applied 15-30 minutes prior to going outside in the sun. Also, sunscreens contain very harsh chemicals and reapplying every 20 minutes can irritate skin. Some suggest that sunblock should be applied every 2 hours, which is more reasonable. I’d be wary of a sunscreen that directs reapplication every 20 minutes, that’s harsh on the skin. I just talked to my dermatologist today who said that Aveeno is good because it’s not harsh and and does’t burn the skin and eyes as some other brands do. The SPF label is multiplied by 10 and divided by 60 to tell you how long the the protection is supposed to be. You can refer to these links below for how often sunblock should be applied.
