I think if someone is a friend, you want to save them from their own mistakes. If they don't have the ability to objectively reason out their own actions then it's a friend's responsibility to help them out. I agree with Minah-pa that the 'stroke and slap' method can be very effective in preventing someone's ego from being bruised. Friends often are more willing to listen if they know that you respect them but care enough to say something. I would definitely say something without hesitation if the person is anything more than an aquaintance.
