Celebrations in Srinagar after Pakistan win

Srinagar erupted in celebration and scores of Kashmiri youth poured on to the streets and lit firecrackers.—AP

SRINAGAR: Residents in ‘Indian administered’ Kashmir Sunday fired crackers in the region’s main city after Pakistan beat Sri Lanka to win the World Twenty20 championship, witnesses said.

Srinagar erupted in celebration after Pakistan beat Sri Lanka by eight wickets and as scores of Kashmiri youth poured on to the streets and lit firecrackers.

The youths also chanted pro-Pakistan and pro-freedom slogans as Indian paramilitary troops stayed in their bunkers, witnesses said.

Thousands of Kashmiris, including women and children, were glued to their televisions sets to watch the tense final.

‘It is a great victory and one day I hope we will merge with Pakistan,’ said a die-hard Pakistani cricket fan, Mohammad Yaseen.

Residents in Muslim-majority Kashmir valley traditionally support Pakistan in sports events.

Alhamdulillah, Alhamdulillah, Alhamdulillah!

We are the World Champions! How cool is that? I am currently in Austria which is not a cricket crazy country at all. So I went to one of the Australian places here in Vienna with a couple of friends to watch the match on a big screen.

We had a throroughly good time celebrating there, even though we were not many. And the good thing was: The Sri Lankan fans who had shown up there have been very fair and congratulated us all afterwards. Respect!

Younis Khan, Shahid Afridi and other members of the team receive rapturous welcome on arrival

Younus Khan urges team to take T20 form into tests and ODIs

‘I was always confident we could win this tournament once we started winning matches and got into a momentum. Our nation deserved a feel good moment in these hard times,’ Younus told reporters.
‘We need to show the same consistency and the same winning mentality in other forms of the sport. My dream is to see Pakistan cricket at the top in test and one-day cricket as well.’

Afridi dedicates Twenty20 triumph to terror victims

‘Throughout the world cup I only thought about winning this for those people who have been affected by terrorism in our country,’…
Afridi was disappointed the next World Twenty20 in West Indies was just nine months away, leaving Pakistani fans very little time to savour the triumph.
‘You don’t win the World Cup everyday,’ he said. ‘I think cricket is now being treated more like a business. It is hard on the players as well.’
