Tamil Hindus are 80% in S Lank and yes the rest of mostly Christians and some Muslims. However S. Lankan Muslims of Tamil origins do not associate with majority Tamils from S. Lanka.

If you look at the Tamil leadership, it is mostly Hindu. So yes it is an ethnic conflict where the one ethnicity is majority Hindu and the other is majority Buddhist.
