Sporting Patriotism

All that being said, in my opinion Pak fans are perhaps the most difficult fans to please in the world. If the team wins, we shrug our shoulders and move on with an approving nod of the head. And if the team were to not do well.. actually lets not go there. :D Btw with all this, I'm not suggesting that we should take these players and start worshipping them (that is also very immature).

At the end of the day, cricket is just a sport, a game. You win some, you lose some. It is okay to feel down, be disappointed etc etc but to tie national pride and achievements to victories in a game is a very unhealthy approach and indicates to me how far we need to go before maturing as a people and as a country. But I reckon this point deserves another thread.

ps. this last point is not targeted at anyone specific.

Let me repeat one more time. Winning is not important for me. The planning, thinking, effort, attitude and confidence is what I look for in a team.

ok. let me answer one more time. Whether the Pak teams shows the results, planning, thinking, effort, attitude, and confidence or not, I only support the Pak team. If I feel really disappointed, I stop following the game till I feel like getting back into it.

In that case Sambs, you are a blind follower. I can't get myself to support people who lack all the above. I still get nervous when they are not performing. I still get fluttering heartbeat when they are doing good. It's just that. But I do question myself. And this was one of the questions.

I guess I am a blind follower. Regardless of what the field is and how incomepetent and unprofessional our operators are, I will always support Pakistan. Like Faisal bhai said, this is something that is an innate part of me and not something I can control.

I've asked myself the same questions and the answer I find is that it is just a game and that I attach too much importance to it as do most Pakistani people (I feel).

The problem with this example is that you are comparing club teams to national teams. its a whole different ball game.

come on yarr...this is not even debatable....all of us are blind follower and that is human nature...i dont know what are we debating for............

the only exception would be those kids who were born to paki parents but then they spend whole life outside pakistan and only been to pakistan once or twice in their whole lives...their parents will keep telling them about pakistan but of-course they will never have the same feelings about pakistan as their parents do...and it is natural....that is why they become "confused".............

You calling FG confused. Wait when he comes online.

Well... I have lots of free time today.

^ I hardly imagine funguy to be a "confused" person, as in ABCD's. I can see where he is coming from, and no doubt all of us get frustrated at some point or the other by the lack of commitment, lack of professionalism and what not... however, many of us, atleast I am sure about myself, can not switch off the support for Pakistan team just because we see that the management and the team is not doing a good job.

Yeah, we can get frustrated. can lose interest in the game, yes. We can view the matches with sense of indifference, yes. But if Pakistan is playing another team, I can not bring myself to support the other team. Its just not possible. Winning or losing does not determine this feeling.

Phoenix bhai, you're right about the first part.

And I can understand where you're coming from in your second point but I don't think it is a universal principle. You would be surprised at how many people here were not born in Pakistan or didn't live in Pak for large parts of their lives and yet they're some of the most patriotic people I know. They wouldn't dream of supporting any team other than Pak. :)

yarr u r rite..now that i think of all of my freinds who were born and raise in middle east, man they r more patriotic than me...so i admit we can not apply it to every one...and i was not even applyin it to anyone...i was just tryin to make some justification for the ongoing debate.....otherwise every one luvs his/her country no matter what...

It’s a typical desiphobia and it is not just restricted to cricket.
We try not to associate ourselves to things that may cause an inferiority complex. It could be our cricket team, our country or our religion for that matter. Its wise to question where we are going wrong but to switch teams when things are not going your way tsk tsk FG, you should be shot in the arse for being such a traitor. :hehe:

Re: Sporting Patriotism

Almost a year down the line for this discussion. And what a difference a year makes! :-)

When we had this discussion last year in March, Pakistan was under Javed Miandad's coaching. Brilliant strategist, no doubt, and a fantastic player, but highly disorganized, loud mouth and completely lacking modern coaching techniques. In other words, typical Pakistan cricket superstar who rely more on individual brilliance than team-play.

In comes Woolmer with his laptop. Out goes all the legacy thinking and superstardom. In its place, an emphasis on physical fitness, getting the basics right and focusing on the team, rather than individuals. Make strategy to win the game, not to break another individual record. Plan. Select. Execute.

Professionalism? Some will say "yes". For the first time in our history, the word "clinicial" is associated with Pakistan team.

Not to jump the gun, ofcourse, but even in defeat in Australia, I don't think Pak fans were much disappointed. Team Pakistan fought like a unit, especially at the tail-end of the series. Even if Pakistan goes on to loose the next two matches against India, if our team gives their 100%, fights like the talented professionals they are, and gives Indians a run for their money, I am sure the fans will still cheer them no matter what the result is. Victory, ofcourse, is much sweater.
