I am confused as to why people are equating the actual usage of power as a valid reason to show why the problem arises.
Population has very little bearing on how much power is generated. We could have a population of 20 million but that has no influence on how much we generate.
Look at that list and see how many European countries generate power greater than us by a small amount but do not have the same amount of population. As you can see there is absolutely no correlation between power generation and ones population.
Our infrastructure is aging and needs to updated. That has nothing to do with its consumption.

90billion may be the installed capacity but does the infrastructure has capability to deliver it 24x7x365? Plus, do the generating institutions/companies have enough cash 24x7x365 to sustain the power generation? NO. They can generate power but if they are not getting enough cash in return so they can't sustain operations.
