size 1 and size 2 for hospital? CB are you going to feed him gallons of milk in 3 days?
We got a small pack of NB (50 diapers) after we got back from the hospital, we wanted to see what they will start him at, we used NB for 2.5 weeks and then switched to size 1, he was in that size for almost month to month and half. We had bought size 1 before his birth but did not use it right away.
In the first few weeks we had to change him like 10- 12 times during the day.
We only had gripe water on hand, but we didnāt start giving that until day 4 I guess. Initially only when he was gassy. I had bought the grooming and first aid kit, the first aid kit had digital thermometer, bulb to clean nose, spoon, injection and an eye dropper. When he got his first flu, then we bought baby tylenol and saline drops. Saline drops come very handy cleaning those little noses
My mom started messaging him on day 14⦠I guess, we use Johnsonās baby oil.
Once he got to size 1, we bought a big 230 diaper box, it lasted a month and then he was ready for size 2.
Everyone already answered all your questions, so I wonāt repeat.
For massage though, I use grapeseed oil. Itās natural like olive oil, but easier to massage with than anything else Iāve tried. My baby has bad eczema, so I never use J&J products. The number if bad reviews Iāve read about j&j baby products, Iād be wary of it. The body shop has a wonderful baby lineā¦lotion, wash, shampoo, and body butter. I love it! Aveeno is good too.
I also back up Seabee on the Johnsonās products, theyāre so heavily fragranced and full of chemicals that Iād never put the stuff near a babyās skin.
Aveeno is actually owned by Johnsons and it too has a ton of chemicals in it. If anything dove and cetaphil are supposed to be best for sensitive skin.
CB- Breathe!!!
Nappies - i bought 1 pack of newborn pampers and 1 of size 1. baby was 7lb 3oz when born and so used the newborn then moved onto size 1 when finished- as someone mentioned it is never urgent to move up to the next size- trust me you will know what to do at the time- if you look ate nappies you will notice there is an overlap of weight sizes in them anyway.
Yep- they will be the most exp things you buy!! you become an expert at noticing supermarket offers (3 for 2/ or 2 for Ā£16 etc or the bulk boxes at Asda/Tesco/Sainsburys etx (Boots Iāve noticed is more expensive even on offer!)
First aid: in all honesty for a newborn there is nothing you should be really using- calpol is from 2 months and even then only for immunisations general use is from 3 months.
you can use infacol/colief/& some gripe waters from birth- so prob worthwhile getting one of those in,
themometers,
I use Boots zinc & castor oil nappy cream liberally and Mashallah we havenāt had a case of nappy rash yet (Heās 11 months)
Saline drops are safe from birth as well (used for blocked nose/congestion)- the brand name is Nasosal and is available from boots (Boots have an own brand as well)/most pharmacies/supermarkets in the baby aisle. Iāve used this quite a bit !
vapour rubs etc are all from 3 months so no rush yet.
Regarding massage- we massaged from the first day we got home- he loved it, definitely good to have hands on feeling. We started with Johnsons products but noticed his skin dried out and became flaky. so stopped using them and used Olive oil from then on to date, the absorption is really good for their skin (although Iāve been told Rapeseed oil is even better). I bought Simple baby products for everything else.
Donāt get size 2 diapersā¦theyāre for babies form 12-18 lbs. Get newborn and size 1ā¦newborn fit most babies and size 1 are for the bigger babies (8-10lb babies). So just to be on the safe side you should have both. And I would get the smallest pack available for bothā¦itās just a test.
You shouldnāt be giving your baby gripe water until heās at least a month old. And even then, consult your pediatrician before you decide to give it to him. Iāve never heard of giving prune juice to babiesā¦I would stay away from it since babies digestive systemsā are so young and still developing. You should defo have a first-aid/medical kitā¦thermometer, bandaids, baby tylenol/ibuprofen, gauze pads, petroleum jellyā¦Kinzz pretty much covered it all. If you donāt want to buy everything individually (Iām lazy =P) I just went to babies R Us/Buybuybaby and got a ready made first aid kid for infants/children. Super-easy and everything was included in it. You can re-supply items that you run low on as time goes on.
Massaging babies is good for themā¦helps them sleep better at night, and is just generally relaxing, I think. I started massaging my son from day one and I used Johnsonās baby oil. All you need is a couple of drops and itās more than enough for their tiny bodies. My hospital offered a 4-day class on how to massage babies for only $10ā¦but I was staying with my mom and she pretty much taught me it lol. I can say for a fact that a massage and bath at night defo helps my son fall asleep faster and for longer at night, heās 2 months old and has been sleeping 5-6 hour stretches at night since he was about 3.5 weeks old. When I donāt do either heās fussy and sleeps late, wakes up more than once at night etc. Plus my hubby gets to bond with himā¦and so do Iā¦itās fun.
Diapers are really expensive yes. I was reading an article about how the chemical in diapers that makes them really absorbentā¦thereās certain companies around the world that make them. There was one in Japan that made 20% of the worldās supply, and the factory burned downā¦and other companies were running at full productionā¦hence, raising the price of diapers a lot more than normal. I buy my sonās Pampers from Samās Club (kind of like wholesale store). A back of 186 diapers costs $40 hereā¦and a 96 pack from normal stores (babies r us etc) cost $40. =/ Try to find wholesale if you can. If you still find the prices too much, there is the option of cloth diapering. You can look it up.
Saline water is for clearing up a babies nose. Put a couple of drops in the babies stuffy nose and massage it, and using the bulb syringe you can suction out all the mucous and saline water. My son caught the cold form me when he was about 2 weeks old, thankfully I was breastfeeding and so he only had a mild caseā¦but he did have a stuffy nose and saline water really helped clear him up.

Great advice by alot of the above people.
One thing though DO take your own nappies as the hospitals in the UK do not provide any and tell you to bring your own. All three of my boys were 8 pound and above so we used size 1 nappies at first. I would take size 1 and if you need newborn you can always ask hubby or family to bring it up to the hospital, the hospitals will give you one or two nappies if needed but then would ask you get hubby to bring more.
My son was 7 lbs 12 ounces and the newborn diapers leaked so I got the premie ones. My daughter was 8 lbs 5 ounces and we started on premie ones first even though she was not a premie. After we ran out of the first package we used the newborn ones. Every baby is shaped differently. I stocked up on different sized diapers through out my pregnancy so that cost wouldnāt be an issue. I bought whenever there was a sale and also used coupons. Using the genreic ones at Walmart (Asda in the UK) helped cut down on costs too. Call andf ask the hospital if they shall provide diapers for while you are staying there.
Jhonsonās baby oil or olive oil is fine. You donāt have to massage every day.
1- Nappies .. Thinking of getting a pack each of size 1 and size 2, for the hospital .. or should i buy the newborn one? What do you guys suggest? My daughter was in hospital for 2 weeks and they provided the diaper and also did the diaper change. It was a new born size which used to cover her till her neck . Later on , as there was no diaper available below new born size I sticked to the zero (new born) size for a few months. I donāt know what brands are available there but I always got huggies and pampers for her and never the unbranded or unknown brand diappers made from china that are available here in bulk.
2- Friend asked if I have prepared a baby first aid box, I havnt and freaked out .. now I need to find out what all I need to keep around for baby health.
Gripe Water? dettol? what else? do babies need Gripe water during the first few weeks of birth? what about prune juice etc ?
I didnāt give her gripe water till first 3-4 months. I didnāt have any first aid box for her separately. Just get a good thermometer I had the digital one to be used in underarm but in my opinion if u can get the one used in ear get it as it is much more convenient.
3- Baby massage .. i have read that babies should be massaged almost every day , they like it and its healthy for them .. should I use Johnsons baby oil kind of thing to massage? do we start massaging babies from the first week? We did oil massage from olive oil
4- the nappies again, oh my god, they are so freaking expensive .. or am i looking at the wrong place? how do you guys manage costing on nappies? since her father was never took her responsibility & have never been around , my parents took responsibility of her diaper and milk & they always got it in their monthly grocery shopping in bulk (2-3 big packs) . .
CB if u live in the uk join the pampers website they will send you 10 free newborn nappies in ur last trimester so u can c if its the right size then send hubby out to get more also the bounty packs have freebies too.
If not in the uk then go for a small pack of newborn ur little one will grow out of it quickly.
My kid was a hairy baby too I blame her dads side of the family.
Thing is all that baby hair will shed even if you donāt do anything. She still has a little hair on her back though .. I wish Iād done that attaa thing Some people swear by it. I need to know how to do it .. can someone tell me how to?? I wanna be prepared for this baby just in case heās a hairy kid too!!
Johnsons baby oil isnāt recommended as its drying. Instead olive oil is better. Re: nappies just.go for size 1 initially. Nappies are expensive though, but own brands are economical and can be as.good. Otherwise use cloth nappies. By cloth i donāt mean towelling but nappies that look like disposables but are washable and are fastened similarly with velcro. They come in such pretty designs, are chemical free, and work out much cheaper long term. I love my cloth nappies.
