SHEFFIELD, England (AFP) - Mark Williams went into his World Championship showdown with Ken Doherty insisting that his far less gruelling route to the final would not be an advantage.

Wales’ Williams, who continued his run of comfortable wins at the Crucible with a 17-8 semi-final win over Stephen Lee, has played only 72 frames in total on his way to his third world final compared to the 98 that Doherty has featured in.

The difference is the equivalent of an additional match and Doherty will also have to recover from the draining experience of coming back from 15-9 down to beat Paul Hunter 17-16 in his semi-final.

But Williams, bidding to repeat his 2000 triumph here, insisted the pair would start the best-of-35-frames final on an even footing.

“I don’t think the way the two of us have got to the final will be a factor. With the way that Ken has won, he will be over the moon,” he said.

"He must have thought he was out of the competition so he has got a second bite of the cherry. he will be elated and really up for the final - but the score-lines I’ve had have been unbelievable really.

"The scorelines suggest I have won quite easily every match. They’ve been quite big margins and I’ve been playing quite well to be fair.

"The first session of the semi-final set the tone. To be 7-1 up is a massive lead really. He came back in the second session and won the first four frames and could have won a few more in that session.

“I managed to lose 5-3 which I was delighted with but I always felt in control of the match once I got that 7-1 lead. I always felt quite comfortable.”

"I am looking forward to the final. This is what we dream about. It’s the big stage, 270,000 pounds first prize.

"You haven’t got to say anymore. I can’t wait to get out there and give it my best. I am feeling really relaxed. I am playing quite good. I’ve had a couple of bad sessions but they’ve turned out not so bad sessions. The only session I lost was the one to Stephen Lee.

“When you have the bad sessions you have still got to stick in there and if you are going to lose them try not to lose them 6-2 or 7-1.”

Doherty’s place in the final was secured on Saturday after England’s Hunter suffered one of the biggest collapses in the history of the championships.

Leading 15-9 overnight and needing just two more frames to book a place in the final for the first time in his career, the blond 24-year-old Hunter was left helpless as Doherty, the 1999 champion, dramatically clawed his way back into the match.

The Irishman swept into action and took the first five frames of the day to trail 14-15 before Hunter, who had won just one match in his previous seven visits to the tournament before this year, eventually allowed his nerves to settle as he edged ahead 16-14 to stand just one frame from victory.

However, it was Doherty’s experience which told as he took full advantage of his opponent’s increasingly error-prone game.

“It was so gripping throughout the match. I gave myself a glimmer of hope but I thought I had blown it when I went 16-14 down,” said Doherty.

"For once I’m stuck for words. I always believed I had a chance and my sports psychologist always said to me to dream about it and it will come true and that is what I did.

“But luck was on my side today - somebody up there likes me.”

Things were a lot more straightforward for Williams who took a 10-6 overnight lead in to his semi-final against Lee, the seventh seed.

He extended that advantage to 14-6 and then 16-8 before Saturday’s final session and then wrapped up the tie in 20 minutes.

What a final. Williams finally won it 18/16.

One of the best finals I have seen. The way Doherty came back to level the match at 12 all after being 10/2 down was breathtaking.
