Sniper Receives Death Sentence: Double standards of the West
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. Nov. 24 — Jurors decided Monday that John Allen Muhammad should be executed for masterminding the deadly sniper attacks that terrorized the Washington area for three weeks last fall.
As the verdict was read, Muhammad maintained the same unflinching demeanor he had shown through most of his trial. The jury deliberated five hours over two days before reaching the verdict against Muhammad, a 42-year-old Army veteran who had asked police to “Call me God” during the October 2002 spree.
The jury concluded that prosecutors proved both aggravating factors allowing the death penalty: that Muhammad would pose a danger in the future or that his crimes were wantonly vile. He was sentenced to death on both counts he was convicted of last Monday: multiple murders within three years and murder as part of a terrorist plot.
“As we said from the get-go, the death penalty is reserved for the worst of the worse,” prosecutor Paul Ebert said. “We think Mr. Muhammad fell into that category and we think the jury agreed.”
Only Texas has executed more people than Virginia since the death penalty was reinstated in 1976 310 to 89. Virginia is one of 21 states that allow the execution of inmates who committed capital crimes as 16- and 17-year-olds. Malvo was 17 at the time of the shootings.
Sniper Mastermind Receives Death Sentence
So this person is found guilty of murder, fine. But hold on the so called moral and dictating west often criticise muslim countries for passing death sentance on people found guilty of a crime.
But when the shoe is on the other foot it is fine for America to electrocute, gas, hang, shoot and inject its criminals no problem no outcry of humanity and human life and peace and this and that!
Because why it is double standards and hypocrisy yet again from the west!
many states in the US don't allow death penalties, there is still a lot of internal debate in the US as to the usefulness of this punishment..
the 'west' is more than just USA.. most Europeans abhor this form of punishment.. go take it up with them.
and why do you have to pick every news item and use it to go 'west-bashing'??
P.S. there is already a thread on the subject.. why open another?
ak47, I think you are missing the point. This loon deserve to be put to death. There are many states in US that has death penalty, Texas leads all of them. This is not a case where they brought back the death penalty just for this case. Your argument about double standards does not apply. When other countries are critcized about the treatment of the so called criminals, its not the penalty but how the person was convicted.
John M was given a fair trial, he was allowed to present his defense and so on and so forth. Those simple but essential elements are often time omitted in the other countries.
Kaleem
I am not missing the point at all, and i am not debating if this guy is innocent or guilty. I am simply stating the fact that if in a muslim country there was a fair trial and person was convicted of murder and given death sentance the west would complain and say barbaric islam and corrupt judge etc.
But when the crime is committed in west and death sentance passed it no problem it all hunky dory.
Most of the Western countries that criticise Muslim nations for having the death penalty tend to be even more damning of the USA, for being a western country that still has the death penalty.
I don't think you hear too much protest if a serial killer is put to death in an Islamic country, do you have an example?
Does'nt matter if criminal is serial killer, rapist, thief, drug dealer etc thats not the issue!
The issue is Death sentance! it ok for the west to pass a death sentance on criminals but not ok for muslim court to do same!
The guy was a cold and calculating murderer who terrorised a whole city, and deserves the death sentance. I don't see any double standards in this case at all, just the completion of a free and fair trial leading to real justice.
And the other guy Malvo should also get the deserved-death penalty, and both these creeps should be removed from the face of this Earth as soon as possible.
but why authorities decided to have two separate trials? both are involved in same crimes and both should have been tried at once. john allen has already been convicted and molvo is just going on trial. a lot of information can be used now to save him, who did the actual killings and the supporter is already on death row now.
