yes dhuan hee dhuan. :D

Re: Sir Viv Richards: Arguably The Greatest Player Of Our Time

For those who doubt the quality and pace of bowling during Viv’s era.

Re: Sir Viv Richards: Arguably The Greatest Player Of Our Time

See the shot that Viv took off english bowler Mike Hendrick 1:04

Viv shows the best class with that shot. When Viv moves past off stump to give himself room, this still gives him the option of being able to hit a good length ball.

@ Nikema. I rate Greenidge very highly too. He was a savage cutter. He was recently named in Windies all-time test XI by cricinfo

What About Bradman Guys

Re: Sir Viv Richards: Arguably The Greatest Player Of Our Time

I was too young to follow cricket in the 80s.. and unfortunately there isnt too much footage available.. but from whatever I have seen.. he certainly looks pretty awesome.. so much aggression i love it.. don't forget that batting was more traditional back then... in todays era u find many batters being very aggressive and smakcing the ball everywher but to do this in the late 70s and 80s he must have been awesome to watch..

Re: Sir Viv Richards: Arguably The Greatest Player Of Our Time

Post a few videos of Bradman and his greatness an people will believe he is the greatest.

Personally I do not like overly aggressive batsmen as they are highly inconsistent. However, in Sir Viv Richards case he was aggressive as well as consistent that is why he is regarded as one of the greats. But to call him the greatest is arguable.

Re: Sir Viv Richards: Arguably The Greatest Player Of Our Time

But do u really think he was the greatest ......i mean did he scored all this runs to the Greatest bowlers ever ......

Re: Sir Viv Richards: Arguably The Greatest Player Of Our Time

But he played on terrible pitches. He played a lot of cricket on damp pitches which helped the bowlers a lot.

Viv Richards Quotes

“One day cricket is like fast food. No one wants to cook.”

“I hope the Young West Indian players of today do realise the mantle on which they are standing”

“Man, it don’t matter where you come in to bat, the score is still zero” (Viv Richards to Sunil Gavaskar at Madras 1983)

“This thing must stop and the authorities must treat this like someone with a nuclear bomb. If you have the fabric which is human civilization and human society being brought down because of color and race, to me, that is like a killer with a nuclear reactor in his hand.”

Greg Thomas was bowling to Viv Richards in a county game. Viv missed a superb outswinger, and Thomas said "It’s red, round and weighs about 5 ounces. "Next ball Viv hits Greg Thomas out of the ground and replies, “Greg, you know what it looks like. Go ahead and find it !”

Re: Sir Viv Richards: Arguably The Greatest Player Of Our Time

Why? I believe that Steve Waugh team has been the greatest team seen in international cricket. Two pillar in the batting order are Hayden and Gilchrist. Both of them are explosive player. May be not as great as Viv Richards but saying they are completely out of the league is an overstatement. There are not many player as explosive as Gilchrist and Hayden and so consistent.

Re: Sir Viv Richards: Arguably The Greatest Player Of Our Time

Ok I am not going to be diplomatic any more :D

Tendulkar, Lara, Ponting, Gilchrist, Hayden , Kallis, Dravid, Sehwag, Inzi, Yousuf, Miandad, Border, Gavaskar, Greg Chappell, Clive Lloyd, Haynes, Greenidge, Zaheer, Azharuddin etc.(not necessarily is any order) - throw in a few more names from the last 2-3 decades. They are/were all great batsmen but they are/were essentially great accumulators of runs who could thrash any bowling attack on their day, some of them having the latter ability more than others but none of them could destroy bowling attacks esp. pace bowlers like Viv did in his heyday and he did so consistently. He used to intimidate fast bowlers. Noone cut such an imposing figure at the crease or looked as majestic or graceful as Viv did back then. Some of the shots he played were truly amazing and breath-taking. He was just a delight to watch.

Remember we are also talking here of an era which was easily the golden age of fast bowling. Viv ofcourse never had to face his own fearsome pace bowlers (Holding, Roberts, Marshall, Croft, Garner, Clarke etc.) but there were many other great pacers around incl. Thompson, Lillee, Imran and Hadlee.** Infact among his contemporaries, Imran Khan had the best record against the West Indies** 80 wickets in 18 tests @ 21.19 followed by Richard Hadlee 51 wickets in 10 tests at 22.04. And although Botham and Kapil were not express pace, in helpful conditions both were better than Flintoff and Kallis IMO.

Greatness as a batsman can be measured by many things

  • batting average
  • sheer number of runs and hundreds
  • number of match-winning innings/ ability to play your best when the chips are down
  • longevity in the game
  • your attitude
  • sheer ability and class

And I am making that judgement purely based on Viv's sheer class and ability to dominate bowling attacks esp. pace bowlers like noone

btw....Windies sides of the late 70s and early-mid 80s were even better

Re: Sir Viv Richards: Arguably The Greatest Player Of Our Time

Actually Imran Khan was asked the same Q by an excited indian audience in 2007 and he said this
