You know, I was made to understand waaaaaaaaaayyyy back in the day when I was like in high school/middle school, that the feds have programs to help single moms.
But I do not think anyone including the fed govt will help pay 1 month's rent right before mom has a chance to get a new job.
And you know the surprising thing is that these ladies are not bad. They're not the kind of people who get fired from jobs because they had a bad attitude.
I felt so horrible doing it, but I was advising them to look for jobs at fast food chains, and also to pawn off any jewelry or goods they might have.
Can you believe it? Here I am, Ms. Looking-to-make-something-great-out-of-my-life, and the only advice I can give them is to go work for Miccy-dees.

They do help single mothers right up until they get a job. Then there is a month where everything is left hanging and one of three things happen.
1) They manage to cut a deal with the landlord to pay the deliquint (sp? my bane :( ) part of the rent over time. Very very few landlords do this.
2) The landlord doesn't care and starts eviction proceedings and the girl at last gives up and ends up getting fired from the days she has to take off getting together rent relief, child care, and food stamps (all take seperate days waiting forever in the office of choice just to submit the paperwork, not to mention the follow up day interviewing). It is far easier to collect welfare than to actually juggle work and child and everything else you have to do in the transition period. Not that anything is easy, but it is truly challenging to face this for about 3/4 months it takes for paperwork to clear and everything to be paid.
3) Girl keeps job and goes into a shelter and balances job, child and shelter. All of which are designed to be at opposite poles. She still does all the paperwork for rent relief, food stamps, and child care but mostly the shelter handles them, so her days off are minimalized. On the other hand, half her stuff disappears while she is there due to the problem of being unable to lock anything because of the addicts she and child share space with.
The system promotes failure in most cases, unless they have backbones of steel.
