Who are “they”? Are we talking about people who are citizens of that particular country regardless of race/religion…as in a Muslim who is a U.S. citizen or Canadian citizen? And even with that, are we talking about someone who is a citizen by birth OR someone who obtained citizenship by pledging loyalty to that country’s government and agreed to obey its laws?

Or by “they”, are we talking about people who are not citizens but are in the country through some type of visa/residency?

I think by they, OP referred to the foreign-descent families or their generations in particularly from east and who have now turned religious. But yes its vague.
