That’s idealistic and naive. Unless the man is in academia or an artist, and brings something to the relationship besides a paycheck, the woman will lose respect for him. What if she wants to take some time off for kids and she can’t? What if he can’t handle not contributing his fair share? In some cases, women hate the fact that they have to carry their husbands. These are not reasons I’m pulling out of my ass but things I’ve read in academic journals and articles in the news.
It’s not a set-in-stone rule (IMO) but it takes a special kind of couple to make such a marriage work.
