should i complain about this teacher

Nope, I don't teach in the UK :)

i was going to say the same thing. your brother may have a learning disability, take him to school psychologist.

RV, i don't even have to read your name and know it's your post. the length, the red, the bold, the detailed solution! haha..i love reading your posts.

PyariCGudia,

You teach as well? VENT AWAY! One of the things I've noticed is how things have seemed to drastically change (in not too many years) regarding how parents raise their kids.

I'm in my twenties, but I notice a big difference. I remember that when I was growing up...... If I ever came home complaining that so n so teacher was "unfair" or "mean".......my parents calmly listened to me......BUT they also understood that I'm a child and I see things from a whiny, defensive, kids' point-of-view........and that the teacher is the adult and the professional. To be fair, my parents would even tell me where I went wrong in the scenario and explain to me why the teacher might have gotten upset.

They understood....that although I was their daughter......and usually quiet by nature........that I was NOT ALWAYS responsible, or careful, or bright, or even innocent for that matter. My mom would say that your parents bring you into this world and your teachers...by imparting knowledge....help you reach the sky.

If I flunked a test.......my parents knew that it was because I was too lazy to study for it or that my SUPER CARELESS MISTAKES on the test are a CLEAR REFLECTION that I didn't care to put in the effort. And because they understood and saw this..........my parents held ME responsible as opposed to blaming/complaining about the teacher.

I LOVE IT when a fair-minded and professional principal tells the parent to "Talk to the teacher. I am not the one managing the classroom".......which is an obvious and sensible response.

I'm not saying ALL parents are like this. I've seen MANY parents who are responsible, MashaAllah. And there ARE some teachers who are very unprofessional and shouldn't be anywhere near children.

In the past, I've given detentions for chewing gum, returning a pencil by tossing it in the air, not following directions, disrupting class, consistently being irresponsible, mouthing-off to the teachers, bullying, etc. MANY SCHOOLS (public and private) **even have penalties such as detentions for students who consistently fail to do homework or fail to follow directions. **MANY SCHOOLS even send parents the discipline papers which explain the consequences for each infraction/offense. I guess some parents don't read the papers.

I'm not perfect but I'm firm with my students because I want them to be academically strong and ready for the next grade. That's why I don't believe in sugar-coating things and babying them. I tell my students........"If I as your teacher can take out the time to type hand-outs that are written neatly and clearly to facilitate YOUR learning............then YOU AS MY STUDENTS........better take the time out to give me assignments that are neatly written and that are indented, that have appropriate punctuation, that have clarity, and reflect effort. I don't want anything less than those basic requirements.....or you'll do it right!"

I've even given students writing penalties (write a line over n over again) because they consistently don't bother to complete their work thoroughly, or frequently fail to capitalize the beginning of a sentence, or turn in their work late all the time. And I've noticed........so far...........that since kids don't like the writing penalties............then soon start to shape-up and do the work correctly and responsibly. Then they get praised for it......and it motivates them to keep up the progress.

I call it tough love.

Re: should i complain about this teacher

^ RV and pcg..did u guys notice that since you were in school, kids these days have a harder time with basic english and grammar, thanks to texting and internet lingO?

Re: should i complain about this teacher

They have a harder time in general because mama sitta is more interested in her new boob job and phasaa-ing husband number 2 than raising a stable and educated family.

But then again, I live in South America.

Re: should i complain about this teacher

^ I am aware that texting is and can be a contributing factor to poor grammar skills. I've even brought that point up with my students. In fact, the factor was also discussed during a staff meeting.

But that still can't be used an excuse. Writing has a purpose. The other day, I was demonstrating to my students how to write notes in science. And I told them that since notes are intended to be brief, you can use abbreviated symbols such as b/w to stand for "between"...........HOWEVER you may not use that symbol when it comes to formal writing such as essays because it has a different purpose/audience/feel.

I've noticed kids in middle school who have difficulty spelling basic words such as "because" "good" "could" "would", etc. They have a hard time understanding what a noun or verb is and the role they play in sentence structure. I believe that language deserves respect for it's rules. I wonder if becoming extremely lax in written language will also reflect in spoken language.

Apart from texting......many authors of today's teen books STILL use appropriate language as opposed to abbreviations or shorthand. So, the practice of writing correctly hasn't become completely obsolete yet.

^ Yup, it's sad.

In some situations.......Papa sito doesn't care to be involved with the children.....or is doing time for some offense......and Mama's got her hands full.

Every situation is different.

Re: should i complain about this teacher

Let's be honest.

The value of being lazy and nonproductive is on the rise. Parents are not like desi parents who will watch your every move.

Re: should i complain about this teacher

^ I've seen variation in responsibility when it comes to parents of many races.

But there seems to be maybe a greater.....I don't know what the appropriate word would be.....emphasis? value? for education in Asian culture.

And I've always wondered if that is because people back in the motherland understood how hard it is to make a living and feed a family without a good education especially with strained economy and lack of job opportunities. SO, therefore, they really pushed their kids to do well in school. Whereas........maybe...........in many first-world and highly developed nations.......you have the "slacking off" because there are greater job opportunities and even well-fare systems to fall back on.........hence the lax attitude? Whereas in some countries........you WILL manage to survive and earn a living with the most minimum of educational credentials............in other countries, you are SCREWED big time if you're less than "matric" pass.

Re: should i complain about this teacher

I think some folks are just more interested in their boob jobs.

Re: should i complain about this teacher

^ Give them some credit. At least they know their letters when it comes to the sizes. (C-cup...D-cup). LOL.
