Yes, partner means a different thing for everyone, I began using that word often, because most of my friends aren't married. To me and many, partner in life means husband. To other people, including most of my friends, partner in life means just living together which is very common in the Netherlands. According to an article last year, marriage is becoming popular again here, so perhaps things will change in the future.
For most of Pakistani Dutch people, partner is still a husband (or a wife of course) though.Always interesting to see how people from all over the world look at these ways of life.
