Yes it is, but so what? It’s a beautiful place plus more flourishing economy than Calgary.

I have lived in Vancouver..did my high school and some college there. Vancouver is NOT a good place..especially if you're an accountant. And economy is not good either there. Calgary is much better than Vancouver for sure!.
Re: Settling in Canada - Calgary
OP..i would say..Calgary might be good choice for you to settle. Chacha and Chachi lives there. Been there..number of times. Actally..drove from Vancouver to Calgary..it was AMAZING!..
Re: Settling in Canada - Calgary
They arrived in Edmonton today.
Re: Settling in Canada - Calgary
^ Best of luck to them.
Re: Settling in Canada - Calgary
Extreme weather conditions in Edmonton - -16 degrees centrigade and load of snow on the roads.
Re: Settling in Canada - Calgary
I'm in Toronto for 3 years but no proper jobs so moving to Calgary next month, even if you get an odd job to start it'll pay you well in Calgary but not in Toronto. Edmonton, Regina and Saskatoon are good places in terms of jobs if you don't care about the weather. For me if other human beings can live in those places then everybody can live and and you can easily get halal food and grocery. Calgary is not much expensive, it's almost same as living in Toronto. Vancouver is a bit expensive and you even have to pay for your medical from your pocket unlike other provinces.
Re: Settling in Canada - Calgary
I spoke to my friend who is an accountant..she is working with a firm, and she said as far as she knows, the market is good for accountants...
If you please ask your friend about job market for payroll practitioner because I'm doing PCP certification through CPA(Canadian Payroll Association) and it's kinda related to both hr and accounting. I would really appreciate your help because I'm moving to Calgary from Toronto next month and I don't know nobody there.
Lol..not yet extreme..but it will be getting..winter started with a bang in Calgary. .been snowing every weekend..close to 15 cm

Re: Settling in Canada - Calgary
I don't mean to scare you but the job market in Calgary is pretty tight now. All the big Oil and Gas companies are downsizing. Encana let go like 20% of their workforce recently and Devon just got rid of all its Canadian assets. Other companies are also following suit, though they aren't as extreme. Calgary, as you probably know b now, is not a cheap city to live in. So I would suggest your sister and her family save every penny, and go for any job they can get. A lot of Pakistanis have this "Oh, I'm too good for this job" mentality. This can be very destructive since people rarely get hired into their exact field right away without prior Canadian experience. There are also some English classes (and I believe other continuing education classes as well) offered to new immigrants (within their first year in Canada I believe). Take advantage of these classes. They can only help. Tell your sister to get out as well to take some of these classes. Even if she isn't planning to work, this will help her acclimate herself to Canada.
Also, I would highly recommend that your sister and her family regularly go to their local musallah/mosque for prayers and/or social events. Not only will this connect them to the local muslim community, but might also potentially open some doors in terms of job search. In my experience, there are a number of jobs that are pretty much yours for the taking if only you know the right people. Most important though, Calgary is a very multicultural city and alhamdolillah people are very nice and accepting for the most part. One piece of warning though, watch out for the abrasive redneck types. Don’t engage them, as that rarely ends well. I wish your sister and her family the best of luck, and hope my little essay helped!
Re: Settling in Canada - Calgary
Abrasive redneck type? What is this?
They are living in Edmonton and as people suggested they are facing problems in getting out without a car.

Rednecks are what we call the farmer/rancher types who are really close-minded towards new/diverse things.
Anyways, I only make the occasional work trip to Edmonton, so I can't help much there. But from what I've heard people there do have trouble getting by without a car. Personally, I rarely use my car in Calgary since the public transit is often more convenient for me.
Good luck! And if you have any questions about Calgary, feel free to PM me :)
Re: Settling in Canada - Calgary
Ya..had a spat with red neck dude in Calgary. One time..doing shopping with chachi there.. Guy passed on some disturbing comment to my chachi..who is originally Korean. Almost got in fight..but chachi holded me back. And since she is black belt..i am sure..we would have made good tag team partners.
Having said that..welcome to Canada!---ehh!
