Selecting a Grad School Program, Second Thoughts abt Grad School

irem.

i find it interesting that a lot of computer science is coming to be applied to social science research..and vice versa..one aspect i find particularly intruiging.

emergence its called. sort of like cellular automata but not quite.

the phenomenon where local interactions produce stable, global structure. ant robotics for instance..tries to mimic the way simple creatures like ants produce ant hills optimised in a number of ways..from the no. of workers, to the proximity to food, to its shape.

similarly..cities over a period of time develop structure...persist with that structure over extended periods of time..stable, locally optimal.

i know a researcher here at USC is coming up with a cellular automata based model of peace. i understand hes also working on a model of real estate economics.

then..theres game theory in economics. multi agent systems research takes game theory for a great deal of its foundation.

you dont have to give CS up entirely should you wish to pursue less tedious fields (im not sure if you intended to..just like to announce to the world every now and then how great CS is..)

salaams irem!

graduate studies are only worth completing once you have a clear vision what you wanna accomplish with your degree, I totally understand why you wanna avoid techie-stuff but being a CS undergrad, techie things defintely comes inmto consideration. Minimization of techie stuff should be the goal.

Management related stuff is actually quite a good idea coz you can actually mould yourself after getting a management degree into some social, or say any NGO work plus you can still work at any bank all over the world (specially in pakistan) But doing MBA from US requires a lot of financial backup and if thats not an issue, i think you should give it a seriuos thought...

i agree with someone saying up there about the heart-set thing. You must be clear and vivid what you wanna accomplish with your Masters program. For example take a look at me, how am i struggling to keep up with my studies but i m crystal clear why am i doing this and what am i gonna do with this... :D

Minerva, thanks so much for your detailed response and good wishes :flower1: Are you working in an NGO in Pakistan right now? I understand what you are saying. For the comparative religion bit, you are perhaps right …

Nope, I would like to though :stuck_out_tongue:
