Correct as long as the religions do not have the code of conduct of daily life and laws to govern the state are drawn from the founder of the religion.

Hindu religion or the Buddhist religion does not have a code of conduct on how to treat the slaves. It gives a broad advice on non violence, fair play and justice (And the casteism of India is far more benevolent than slavery) But Islam and Christianity does. So one would question those crimes based on the religion.
